  • Got a 2006 Campag Chorus rear single pivot brake that I cannot for the life of me work out how to centre correctly.

There would seem to be no centering adjuster, the brake itself does not have a knurled surface to grip the frame- out of ideas!

  • do you need a washer?

  • Quite possibly! Would it help if I posted some photo's?

I'm at see with Campag, Shimano I know quite well.

  • so you can not affix the brake to the rear bridge because ..you can't tighten the recessed allen bolt?

  • The rear brake came from a carbon fibre road bike originally.

It has been fitted to a Ti frame, the too-long bolt adjusted by using a large nut as a shim.

Give me a sec and I'll take some photographs.

  • so, when you tighten it, does the allen bolt get flushed with the bridge - does it go all the way in? and it does reach a limit where you can't tighten it any more?

you might need a shorter recessed bolt, do you have another bike you could try and borrow one off.

  • try a washer with the little teeth around the edges...

  • When you tighten it it gets "proper" tight, after you have used a 15mm spanner to adjust the centering whilst you tighten the recessed bolt everything is fine.

Then you pull the brakes on a few times and it is out of centre again.

I am aware that having the nut in there as a spacer is not going to be helping matters, but the campag part itself is smooth, so would offer no purchase either.

Should it have a knurled nut/washer that I am missing?

Or am I missing something altogether more obvious?!

This would be the case without the nut acting as a spacer- it would not do up.

  • You could try setting it up centrally as before, pulling the brakes, and then using the set screws to centre, and see if it holds (teeny-weeny allen key holes at the level of the spring ends - 2mm?).

  • yeah try a washer or a combination of washers. i've not used campag brakes either but i don't think you should be needing to adjust the centering with a massive nut like that ... 'centering' should be done by the surface friction caused by a jagged washer you normally find on back + front brakes. if you have one to hand, try it.

That's what I wanted to do- but there are no set screws- anywhere!

If only there were this would be easy.

  • Are you sure? No holes in the caliper arms anywhere? Normally one side is just a rivet end (black colour) and there's a non-descript hole on the other side, which actually takes a 2mm or 1.5mm allen key...

  • Your def missing a knurled nut and set up is with the 15mm. Fine adjust with the 2mm. Could you be missing the set screws? You should be able to get by without them mind you.

  • There are no set screws anywhere on the brake.
However every picture that I can find online has a set screw...

  • I have the same set still in their box - I've just checked and it seems yours is missing the knurled washer.

So are these holes empty, no allen key screw in either one?

  • From the instructions you will have a little grub screw in the holes indicated if you can adjust the centering. Going from my record calliper that should be the one in the 2nd photo you posted, there wont be a screw on the other side. I found when setting them up it helped to have the cable set up so that the pads were really close to the rim, with the bolt holding the caliper onto the frame slightly loose. Apply the brake and then do that bolt up. Should get them pretty well centred.

Correct- there is no grub screw style thing in either side, it is a little plastic push-insert that has a stirrup shape on the other side to hold the spring in place.

On all the pictures that I have found online one side has a grub/set-screw.

  • Solution:

  • Bollocks. Tektro R920, FTW. Lighter than DA, and less than half the price.

  • I'm not putting that shit on my bike.
You could sneeze and stop your bike. When you weigh 90kg+ I'll take the extra 40g and better stopping thanks muchly. Shimano braking ftw(orld domination)!

  • You know that and I know that but the GF likes Campag
