Chainstay clearance crisis

  • So having run the Pink Pinacolada for a wee while, everything is nicely bedded in.

So I tighten the crank bolts.

Now the left crank clips the chainstay.

Wasn't much clearance to start with, now there's none. There's about 5mm on the drive side, but less than that behind the spider. Don't think skimming the BB is gonna work.

Campag Pista cranks, Chorus 111mm (Italian) BB.

    Any bright ideas?

I'm thinking about a longer BB axle with adjustable cups (ie to maintain chainline and shunt the extra spindle length to the non-drive side.)

But I can't think of any aside from the Phil and Royce, neither of which I fancy paying for.

Or is there a crankset with a more cowboy stance?

    Cheers all.

  • i hope for your sake you haven't overtightened your crank bolts!

  • iso or jis??

  • i hope for your sake you haven't overtightened your crank bolts!

Unlikely. Never managed it before. Fucking hope not!

    iso or jis??

    ISO. Campag, innit.

  • derrrrr. sorry.

    longer b/b? 113mm?

  • That'll throw me chainline off.

    That's the headache.

Chainline is fine, non-drive crank clearance not. Need extra 5mm on the left crank.

  • adjustable b/b?

still have to go for a 116/118mm though.

  • Dude, have you read my OP? ;-P

That's prob the answer, but the only ones that come to mind are Phil or Royce.

I've heard rumours of a 115 Mickey, but I can't track one down.

Just to make it even less fun, I need Italian cups!

  • Worse still, I need the bike to get to work. 17 mile round trip on the ratty old Hardrock is no fun. I've done it.

And Cliff's on holiday for two weeks, so I can't get any assistance there.

Even if I could afford it.

    Which I can't.

  • yes i have, i just like winding you up :)

    your in shit! :)

    crimp your stays???????

  • yup, your in shit!!

  • Yes I am.

Any more of your old loxbol and I'll crimp your stays, young 31!

  • don't worry about them being adjustable a few mm either way won't really notice in your legs/feet

loads of sizes 115/118mm could be an temp. option

    JIS, innit

    Shimano, Japan.....?

    I give up.

    ;-P

  • Do you think you could live with getting a wider non-adjustable BB and a chainline that's a couple of mm out?

I know I could (and have), but I'm weird like that.

  • yup, your in shit!!

    Good edit!

  • :)

basically what bumpf is saying , is there nothing available non-adjustable anywhere?

  • are the cups removeable?

    Good thought, BMMF.

If all else fails a longer spindle and a spacer on the sprocket.

I had a quick google earlier, and this problem doesn't seem to be that rare on large-thighed alu track frames.

Cinelli Vigorelli similarly afflicted apparently, as is the Concept.

  • And Cliff's on holiday for two weeks

  • hey, i said that earlier, fnckpigs!
about the wider b/b, and putting up with it.

  • I thought you were winding me up.

  • Or you could do the above, but to such an extent that you get a correct chainline by mounting the chainring on the inside of the spider. No-one would notice, and if they did, and raised some kind of aesthetic argument, you could just punch them in the fucking face till they shut the fuck up, fucking clueless fucking hipster bike idiot cunts.

  • can't imagine why? :)

    my *edited post, silly!

i know it's not JIS, but the idea was there

Don't think that would work, because the spider is already somewhat snug on the stay. Even with extra spindle, I'm not sure there's space for the chainring on the inside.

As for stamping the lungs out of hipsters, count me in!

  • I'm fully qualified in CPR for 3 years thanks to this week's first aid course, but I pledge not to use it in this context.
