I looked at getting a desk in a shared office, found some good deals on gumtree, studio space too...
In the end I put up a shed on my roof.

What's your budget? Im in a place next to the design museum on the river right now, trying to get more creatives in here at the moment. Right now we have lots of coders, myself (art director / designer) and an illustrator. Would be just a desk space, but the office is nice :)

I know I'm being cheap, but I'm hoping for not too much over a hundred. The uni I want to go to doesn't offer studio space, and I really will need a place to work without distractions (my house is wonderful, but going to get chaotic in september).
I'm guessing if it's neat the design museum (south bank, no?) it's going to be out of my budget.

This is the most amazing suggestion ever. Perhaps one in the garden would work... only thing is I wanted to keep my computer (when I get one) in it. Hmmmm.....

state of my guts at the moment I think I'll try for fart studio.....and its creative too!

That would also put the shed at an advantage... In shed, no on can hear you fart.

I agree on the shed idea....would be amazing (and probably would save you money in the long run).

I was just looking at a pretty wood one with windows for 300...wonderful idea, but I think my house mate who just tore up the garden to plant grass would have heart palpitations if I mentioned it to him.

I'm based in hackney. The thing is that I've seen some advertisements in art shops and on gum tree, but it's hard to search for just that on gum tree, there doesn't seem to be a seperate area for art spaces.

Try Bigben (on the forum), he has a studio in Hackney and might have some ideas.
He doesn't post that much, so try a PM (or check the phone thread, his number may be there). -

contact lighthouse spaces...
they have shared spaces for around 100 i believe. i'm in a private one and it's beautiful.
coud i suggest getting a laptop though, so you don't have to leave your comp in a shared space? -

there are some good spaces on ridley road - i have a studio there - but its £300pm for the room - i share it so pay less.

the shed idea has a major flaw in the winter time ie October to March - too cold to be creative

I saw this place in Hackney Wick recently, looks pretty cool but Im not sure they have availability:
http://www.motherstudios.co.uk/Pages/studio.htmMight be worth a call—from £80pcm it seems

My shed was less than £200, it's a little cold right now, but I'm hoping to get 6 months out of it.....that's cheaper than renting...took me a day to put up.

Wow! Super helpful formenger ftw!
Unfortunitly a laptop is no dice, I need too big of a screen for what I need to do.

a laptop AND an external monitor, is what I've got....15" laptop which into which I plug in a 19" monitor in my "office"

may end up that way...I don't know anything about computers. I think I would prefer not to have a laptop again, but my preferences are based upon spinning a colored wheel in my room and singing the unicorn song til it stops. This is how I became a bike courier.
I guess I'm more or less still in the information gathering stage, But basicly I'm looking for a studio space that is cheap and fairly small. I'm an illustrator and don't need alot of space, but I do need somewhere that's quite and not my house. And the cheaper the better. I'm not in a huge hurry, so if you know of a place that is opening up as late as september, that would still be really good for me.
Also if you've had bad experiences with renting studios or any advice, lemme have it :-)
