How about catching the Greenway from Barking Road?

When seeing the rents I use the Greenway to Barking Road, go up Green Street, ride up Romford Road to Ilford, and head to the depths of Dagenham from there. Easy enough.

barking rd -> a13/east india dock rd -> whitechapel -> city road...
don't lock your bike outside either hospital!

Thanks for that Wools, I'll give that a go in the morning as a test ride. Though going over the A12 flyover from High Street to Bow road does not look like fun :-(.
Rocksteady. I think Ill take your advice and go on the undergrond the first day just to see what they suggest.

cassin, if you're worried about riding along major streets, try to get some cycle training near your new workplace. Moorfields Eye Hospital is in the London Borough of Islington, so as you work there you're eligible for free cycle training. Here's their page on it:
http://www.islington.gov.uk/transport/Cycling/training/
This will improve your riding experience no end and help you feel confident as part of traffic. Highly recommended.
If you choose to do this, let us know how it went!
Hope this helps.

Rocksteady, often they will let me keep my bike in the hospital which is allot safer, but it's a bit of a cheek on the first day just to turn up and ask ;-)
Oliver Schick, thanks for the link. Yes, it's a bit daunting riding around London, especially as I'm only being used to country lane's. I went along the Highway on Friday afternoon in the Rain !! Hats of to you couriers who face that every day. Both lanes stop start, stop start with the road being to narrow on the inside and dodging the on coming traffic on the outside....…
I start on Monday and will give Islington Council a ring about putting my name down for some cycle training, I'll let you know if its like being back a school doing my cycling proficiency ;-)Thanks for all your help

Streets like the Highway will eventually be fine if you get trained, but of course you always pick the route you want. And one of the keys to cycle training is that it's not like cycling proficiency; it's about training on the street, not just in the playground, so that you experience real conditions and it's all directly applicable. Hope you enjoy it!
New job at Moorfields Eye HSP next week then on to the London few months. Anyone know of any good places to leave the bike and a better way into London rather than down the A13 ! Had a look yesterday at both places there just seems to be lots of railings...
