Seatpost - to shim or not to shim?

  • Quick question.
Working on an old frame conversion.
Seat post is knackered and needs replaced but is old size at 26.3mm and a tricky size to find. 26.2mm is fairly readily available.
Reckon i'll need a waffer thin shim for .01mm!?

  • old beer can or some fine grit sand paper would shim it up cheap.

  • My frame is currently shimmed with a bit of CousCous box. Doubt you will find a 26.3 if im brutally honest!

  • ^ Nah, did'nt think so either. Shim it is then. Will need to suck it and see.

    tar.

  • Its fosters can for me, seriously dude aluminium can is basically an accepting repair material. Shim away! Just cut a slimmer shim to get a nice fit.

  • *accepted :s

  • yeah alu can, a good cheep shim - but it's only for a 10th of a mm?

  • Can I get a reeeewind!

Err... I bought a seatpost and funked up the measurement...I don't recommend shatter proof ruler as a substitute for vernier calipers.

So... my seatpost needs to be 32.4mm but I gots 31.6mm.

    My question:

Would a shim be a suitable solution to this problem or should I get a refund and try to find a Thompson 32.4mm seatpost instead?

    Thanks muchly.

  • Send it back and get the 32.4 shims are break fix only

i'd rather get a size to large, measure the depth tape it and sand it down as apposed to a loose seat and chim (see what i did there....)

  • yeah dude on your bike i would just go for the right size, its too nice for a ghetto shim.
    especially the seatpost........

  • use a proper shim. the pegoretti takes an odd 29.4 size so i used a U.S.E thermoplastic shim.

Seconded, I use one on my mountain bike. Awesome piece of kit.

  • Luckily the dude on ebay said I can have a refund so I now need to locate a new 32.4mm seatpost.

Mr Smith I had a look at those USE shims but the one I need is £10 as I need an odd size perhaps?! Will just try and find a proper fitting seatpost. If I really struggle finding one, I reckon I'll get the USE thermoplastic shim.

Cheers dudes, helped make my mind up.

This thread can now return to the murky depths of the forum.

It could be worse--you could have bought a 32.4mm seatpost and your seat tube could be 31.6mm.
