With regards to how many sprockets on the cassette, all you need to worry about is that the number matches the shifters. A 9speed shifter will pull slightly more cable than a 10speed shifter. You can pretty much use any derailleur with any cassette as far as I am aware.
So no, a new 10sp cassette won't be compatible with your 9sp shifters.

9 or 10 spd mech will be fine - it's the shifters that determine the cable pull.
10 spd cassette only really compatible with 10spd shifters and definitely only with 10spd chain.
Just replace the mech.

had to do a ghetto fix job on it in the countryside and limped back home as chain was trying to leap up from 16 to 17 and 18 where it was too tight and siezed up. but it needs to be a geared bike again hippy and pronto too. sell a red steel de rosa circa 1990? not on your lofe mate ;)

If you wanted to waste time and money (a lot of people on this forum clearly enjoy doing so), you could buy a 10spd cassette, swap out the spacers for the ones from your old 9spd cassette, and adjust the set screw on your new mech to nullify your highest or lowest cog.

although i love wasting time BMMF i don't really have the money to waste. next question....what's with short, middle and long cage?
-
• #9
There's a maximum teeth differential. I think it's a combination of front/rear.
The longer the rear mech cage, the greater the ability to take up chain slack in looooow ratios (relative to your highest ratio).
Usually: long for triple, middle for compact (I think), and short for standard double, unless you're running a 27/28t (maybe?).
-
• #10
i'm 53 / 42 is that compact or standard double?
-
• #11
That's a hardman's double. If you've got a 13-23 at the back, or thereabouts, just get a short cage for the crispist shifting.
Now are you going to ask about the mythic 'B-screw'?
-
• #12
Or is it an 'A-screw' - I can never remember...
-
• #13
B-screw
-
• #14
13 / 26 on the back...so there goes the hard man image!
what's with the mythic 'B' screw
-
• #15
B-screw is your Shimano terminology, and it works backwards.
-
• #16
No, it works forwards. A curse on your feeble Italian equipment.
-
• #17
well i have no problems with shimano or campag (i prefer shimano's silent free wheel to campags annoying ticking ) just that my bike came with campag. it's all foreign shite hippy...where is the british chain set? i blame scargill
-
• #18
You're fine with the short cage - double/compact up to 13-26.
Medium for double/compact 13-29. Long for triple.
The A/B-Screw is the connoisseur's rear mech adjustment, and would always need to be altered if you changed the largest rear cog or chain length.
You basically adjust the angle of the mech until the upper jockey wheel gets as close to the largest cog (when that's engaged) as possible, without fouling it. Super crisp shifting is your reward.

I blame the immigrants!

Aussies.. we are simple? :)
Because of your fucking intonation.
managed to total a derailleur today and need to replace it. what kind of things will i need to consider?
bust a campag mirage
have a 9 speed block
will a 10 speed chorus / record be compatable? etc etc
can i but a new 10 speed derailleur and block (both campag chorus or record and not have to worry about having 10 speed anything else (front mech, levers etc)
thanks
(come on andy P help me........8) )
