Threaded Headset Locknut Question

  • How much load does the HS locknut take?

Working on my Claud Butler frame, the old 105 headset cups were damaged, plus the very top thread on the fork had been damaged also so needed cutting down a tiny bit. I took to the LBS to cut down and swap on an unused Campag Mirage hs I have knocking about.

The 105 must be (is infact - by appx 5mm) lower profile, as there was plenty of thread for the locknut to go on - even allowing for the bit to be chopped - however with the mirage it's only got half a turn to tighten with the washer in place, or about a turn and a half if I don't bother with the washer and tighten with 2 hs spanners.

My preference is to keep the washer on, as it makes tightening it a lot less of a fiddle, however at half a turn to tighten I'm worried I could have a big off when I start riding this if it lets go due to the forces on it?

If it's not suitable, I'll see if I can get a like for like 105 headset to put back on, this is gonna hit the pocket though.

    Whadyall reckon?

  • You could try and find a thinner washer I suppose...

  • Not enough threads that. Just leave off the washer.

As you probably know the lock nut just locks against the lower nut to stop it moving, and keep the bearings in the headset loaded at the right pressure.

  • Cheers. I'll look to get a different headset on there, either 105 or any other rec's? browsing since I posted I saw a thread about CK Gripnut, and Tange - any others?
