Thousands of asylum-seekers are currently being kept in prisons throughout
the UK. They haven’t committed a crime, but they can be imprisoned
indefinitely. On Saturday 21st March, we are calling for a demonstration
of all those who want to see an end to all immigration detention -

and just out of interest if we close the detention centre what will the country do with these people and where will they live?
-
• #6
you have a point there, but, it's not really ethical to imprison them, is it?
-
• #7
they will live in a house like any of us? sure you can deport them if you want, but in the meantime do they deserve to live ina prison, especially the children, for nothing more than leaving a warzone/dictatroship/rubbish country?

@woodrow - I agree that it is unethical to detain people (esp children) in a prison with convicted criminals merely because they are seeking to escape from an awful situation in another country but is that Pennine House (I understand it is purpose built airside at Manc Airport) and where are these houses that you mention? Indeed even if such houses were available how would people be prevented from absconding? Regrettably these issues need to be thought through before a solution is found and merely closing such facilities does not solve the problem.

wtf?
We are calling for a demonstration against all immigration prisons and against Manchester's Pennine House in particular. At a meeting last week, local groups such as No One Is Illegal, RAPAR, Comittee to Defend Asylum Seekers, AF-Manchester and others endorsed our call.
**Meet 12noon on Saturday 21st March on Albert Square outside Manchester Town Hall
**from there, a a ride will leave to cycle to Manchester airport. The rest of the demonstration will follow by train. We will re-converge at 2pm outside Terminal 2, which houses Manchester's immigration prison.
The route will follow Sustrans NCN routes 85 and 6 and will be both on and off road (road bikes will be fine though). It won't be a mega fast ride as we are expecting people from all abilities etc.
Please come prepared and self sufficient:
-Bring a spare tube and tube changing tools
-Bring spare batteries
-Bring extra layers, for if it gets colder
-Bring a rainjacket for if it gets wetter
-Bring a Fully Charged Mobile
-Bring a mapbook
Read this before you ride please
This protest will coincide with a demonstration at Yarl's Wood detention centre in Bedfordshire, called by London No Borders.
