Headset spacing

  • I want to be able to barspin my new bike, currently the tyre just catches the downtube.
Sooo - spacing. How's about I slip out the forks, remove the crown race, shove on a headset spacer and slide the race back on above it? Should move the forks down/frame up that little bit I require.
I can't see there being a problem provided the race still presses on nicely that far up the steerer tube.

    Or will I die?

  • i wouldn't remove the crown race. if you're riding 700x23 tyres, just get 700x20s and you might be able to clear it.

  • Depends what you're riding.....? if it's a dedicated tricks bike, and you don't mind the way it looks there are loads of MTB forks you can use if you have 1 1/8" head tube...
search "Handsome Dog" on ebay for a cheap one

If you have a 1' head tube the options are more limited, Kona make a 1' steerer version of the P2 fork http://www.bikeman.com/KON-P2MTNONEINCH.html you can get it in the UK you'll just need to contact kona to find a stockist....

  • Not sure you could even get a headset spacer on there. The diameter where the race goes is usually slightly larger that the rest of the steerer.

    +1

are we talking about threaded forks?

    show us a pic jammy

  • It's a 1" threadless headset.

I'd considered different forks, but that'll cost money. Are the P2s considerably longer than a standard 700c fork? The ones I'm running at the moment are straight blade, to give me the best chance of barspinning. Looks isn't an issue

I'd thought about the race diameter being slightly larger (26 rather than 25.4 I think), but I'm sure a little work with a file and I could make a spacer fit.

skinnier tyre might work and save hassle

  • Yeah but I'm using the bike for tricks - Ideally I'd like to run larger tires for that bit more cushion! I think 20's would be toooo small

  • Well this is my frame with P2's on it, gives the top tube the slightest slope and makes the handling a little more twitchy, but nice....
