• Hi all,

    I currently have a set of carbon 50mm wheels, which have cracked/unusable rims after a crash and general use.

    I currently ride on a set of falcrum 7s found here;
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Fulcrum_Racing_7_Wheel_Set/5360026716/
    With Conti Gatorskins 700c x 23 Tyres.

    As i am looking to start competing in 10mile TTs, road races and hopefully track (not relevant to this wheelset) this summer, am thinking of getting the carbon wheels rebuilt.

    I have been quotes £670 from the wheelbuilder at trigon to rebuild them; he will replace everything bar hubs. This is way too much money to spend on a wheelset IMO for my standard and general funds. The wheels are the same as HED Stinger 50mm wheels found here;
    http://www.onetri.com/stinger-front-wheel-2008-p-1000.html

    My current idea is to get the hubs rebuilt by another forum member onto H Plus Son rims, rather then a carbon rim, as i feel they are far more durable. Just to add, i would prefer to run tubs (as these are for comp use only)

    My budget for the rebuild would be a maximum of £200, as i would only require nipples, spokes and a pair of rims and £20 for labour.

    Can anyone suggest recommended parts which are lightweight and durable, which i should consider?

    Thanks

  • they may be slightly over budget but its worth taking a look at planet-x's range of rims, when i was looking at them they were going for £99 for a 50mm deep one.

  • Theres a few people on the TT forum selling 50mm carbon rims for £200 a pair....although my initial reaction was to stay away from carbon rims

  • Drop Derek an email for advice at:

    http://www.wheelsmith.co.uk

    He's a nice guy and a good wheelbuilder. Also, I know you said no carbon, but the Gigantex rims he has look excellent value at about £110 apiece. Otherwise, the alu Cadence aeros might do the trick.

  • thanks, i have dropped him an email.

  • Interesting, I have been quoted £220 for a complete rebuild (using existing hubs) onto RD Cadence Aero 30mm rims

  • Another thought... if you're looking for maximum bang for your buck for TT usage, it might be worth splashing out on the front wheel, and ignoring the rear for now. The front is much more critical in terms of aero performance. E.g. the 50mm gigantex carbon 16h Derek has would build into a very nice front wheel with aero spokes. You could just run that with your normal rear and then upgrade the rear as and when you have the cash.

  • h+son only come in 36h atm.. with 32h and 28h showing up soon though, or so they say.

  • 32 and 36 available.......28's - no comment
