  • Does it take 650 at the front?

  • Nice frame.
Should be able to get well more then the £60 you paid for it. Somewhere in the region of 2x - 3x I would imagine.

as I posted the pics, I wondered the very same thing. I will check when I get home tonight and let you know.

would that mean it's a lo-pro frame? just wondering how I'd label it for potential buyers.

    cheers

well that would be darn fine. god knows could do with the notes right now. cheers dude

  • If it's any help, I just paid £200 for

A very similar type of frame, except that this is 853 tubing with 753 aero forks, comes with headset and bb, plus it has a pedigree.

I would expect your frame to fetch £100 - £150 - certainly more than the £60 you paid for it.

  • thanks Willo, that's really helpful. lovely bike too - is that for 650 at the front? I need to check what mine is.

  • Looks pretty lo-pro to me dude...

I'm guessing it does take 650 by the looks of it unless it's taller than it looks, I'd take it for £60 but unfortunately my student loan wouldn't stretch as far as the prices stated by Harry and Willo (thanks guys, could have got myself a bargain :p ).

Hope it goes for a good price though.

  • Yup - it's 650 front.

  • This is what it looks like built (hopefully the picture will attach)

    freekin sweet, dude.

  • If the original 531 decal had red and green and black writing then it is 531SL and it is rarer than either hen's teeth or rocking horse manure and is worth a bit more than £60....my 2 cents!

  • I wish I could find out for certain - I've lost contact with the racer I bought it from him, and have no idea who the maker was.

if I got the frame weighed, would that give any indication? or maybe I could get a veteran frame-builder to have a look over and take a guess.

I took a bike to Roberts and Chas no less looked at the frame...now this frame is not top notch...but he said there is no way of telling what tube is present....he said the key things to look for if it is 531 db or SL or competition etc....the shape of the chainstays..good 531 if oval...and the quality of the work around the seat cluster...but if Chas Roberts says it can't be done with any great degree of confidence ...who am i to argue!...You can look on the internet at weight weenies or velobase or classic lightweights...or email Hilary Stone...hope that helps.

that does help actually - pretty much what I figured, and good to know about certain signs of frame quality (mine has ovalised stays, for instance), and the lugs are pretty nice though not quite of the fancy variety.

I'll check out the other sources as suggested, ta!

  • theres been a few frames like this on the forum recently maybe some of the others sellers purchasers might be able to assist

Your frame looks very very similar to this one, in terms of the lug styles/geometry/clearance etc.

As you can hopefully make out, it's a Sirius frame with Reynolds 731 tubing. This one is 130mm spaced at the rear, and takes a 700c front. I'd say it's definitely worth more than the £60 you paid, but really it depends how much people are willing to pay for it! :)

I reckon you could run it fixed with a half link chain and a bit of luck.

  • 75 quid for FGL's ted to change the dropouts to track.
which reminds me i have to phone a man about a TT frame

  • asm, can't thank you enough for helping solve that little mystery - it's been bugging me for a long time before I posted the pic.

you're right - it looks very very similar to the frame you posted (is that your own? running fixed with track ends or the half-chain solution?)

And I've got a strong hunch that it was indeed 731 tubing, but it was so long ago I couldn't quite remember. just knew it was more exotic than yer everyday 531.

and yes, pretty sure it's 700 at the front but will double-check over the weekend.

but nice to know I've got something that someone, somewhere might be interested in buying.

    thanks everyone for feedback.

  • It is indeed mine, and I will be running it using the vert dropouts. The paint job is too nice to sully with the addition of track ends. Plus I don't have another £75 to spend. I haven't got round to fitting cranks/bb yet, so I have no idea if I'll be as lucky with a magic gear as some people have. I'm waiting for some pedals and handlebars to arrive, then it's off to brixton cycles for some toeclips and an a half-link chain. Will post a photo when it's complete!

  • yes, wicked paint job - where'd you get it done or did you buy the frame like that?

defo post an 'after' pic... and fingers crossed you find a magic gear. I was thinking the same thing when I first got this frame (going the half-link route) but never got round to doing anything with it, as you can see. the missus insisted we had to have children and bike tinkering has been severely curtailed ever since. what's a chap to do, eh?

  • PS

when I did a search for Reynolds 731 on google this frame came up:

different fork, but looks exactly the same as mine (and yours) - and like yours it has the 'Sirius' makers name on, which I've never heard of (but google also came up with this (from Cycling Weekly forum) pretty detailed info on Sirius)

the lugs, braze-ons, and ovalised stays and the fork (which it says is Reynolds 708) all match mine.

    cheers
