which audax? just out of interest
-
• #4
spd's
-
• #5
if the OP means he's riding it this weekend I wouldn't recommend taking the plunge with spd's straight away..

• #6
clipless > clips&straps > powergrips
-
• #7
I like power grips much more, but if I was doing 100K I might go for clips.
Never tried spds.

Is there really a need to get the xl size? i Wear size 11 skate shoes most of the time...
If so why do they have to be like 10 quid more expensive?! -
• #9
Spd sls. they wont make your toes go numb or the front of your foot ache because there's a larger area than spd's covered by the cleat>wider distribution of pressure. They're also not THAT hard to get used to, and you get to pull up as well as push down. No brainer really. Just make sure, if you get them, that you get the 105 pedals, and yellow cleats, they're the most comfortable, and best value.

I'm size 11 and I got XL because that was all that was in stock.
I had to cut them down and punch extra holes because they were huge. -
• #11
They say 12s up so I suppose a chunky 11 should be ok for a normal size.

SPDs rule

SPDs, take a few times falling off to get used to.

My problem with the pedals is that some days with heavy rain I use mudguards and overshoes so I have some toe overlap.
With power straps it won’t get worst...
**With toe clips I can still use the other side of the pedal with the overshoes **in heavy rain...
SPDs would be the best but then what about toe overlap...?????
PS: I am riding the Otford, Sevenoaks 100k, if I manage to prepare my bike by Saturday: pedals and gearing (change from 48*18 to 48*20) for the hills. -

SPD's for good transmission and the toe overlap will be similiar to clips and straps.
Personally not a massive fan of hill climbs with clips and straps, as when I pull up I tend to find the straps moving.
If you're not sure about making the transition to SPDs' tighten your PowerGrips up and stick with them.
Just my 2p. -

SPDs are good

i like powergrips but whenever i did any distance they would begin to do somthing bad to my ankles. anything under 20~miles was fine and i liked them, but i think they put you ankle in a bad position that only becomes aparent after a decent amount of time.

SPDs are for mountain bikes, use a road cleat on the road.
-
• #19
Spds are for road shoes as well otherwise they wouldnt come drilled for them, although I prefer look type pedals as they have a bigger platform and I think offer more support

Here's my offering!!
been riding looks for god knows how long. I feel much more under control clipped in, riding anything else just feels sloppy now. I think i fell off once, the first time i ever rode spd's, up until i took up bike polo that is, but i don't think thats any great surprise.
If u want good power t/f its gotta be cleats and tere not THAT hard to get used to.

SPD's all the way unless you have nice stiff cycling specific shoes to use with clips/straps already. Ignore any reference to road shoes/cleats - imagine having to stop halfway up a climb and then having to re-start with single sided pedals..... fuuuuuuuuck that my friend. All very well using them if you're a mega strong rider who will never stop on a hill (punctures/mechanicals aside), but audax organisers love to throw in 25% climbs that get most people walking and you don't want to be doing that with road shoes.
Hi,
I am doing a 100k audax this w/d with plenty of hills so I need better power transfer...what is better Power Grips or Toe Clips?
Any sugestions for both and related online shops?
Thanks!
