Supposedly all the pros use them but they don't come on stock bikes. Is that a lie? And if not. Why don't they come on stock bikes?

Because if the derailleur is set up properly then the chain can't come off... Although if you run a single front chainring on and gears at the back they are semi handy as the chain has a habit of coming off when you hit big bumps, at least mine did

I had one on my Specialized Allez, with it's heady mix of Sora and Tiagra, but when I changed that for the Cannondale with Ultegra and Dura-Ace there was no chain keeper present.

You could always make one?

What's the "official" name of the plastic clamp-on hook bit which goes under the front derailleur, which catches the chain if it comes off? Or even better, can anyone link one on wiggle or chainreaction?
Cheers
