  • oh yeah totally, knees get very weak for fixed riders, especially for those riding brakeless and high gearing.

Ive recently went for a skate and noticed that my knees where too weak to push after a while. It feels like there is a bigger gap between your bones, and not only in the legs.

scary stuff. What medicine is out there that has the right calcium for bones?

  • 4 pints of milk/day FTW!

  • No mechanical load on the bones, would jogging help?
and yes 4 pints of milk FTW.

  • On that last point, jogging shit, running good, running in Pumas, very bad.

Running would help quite a bit i'm sure though.

  • They were also more likely to have osteopenia and osteoporosis than those in the control group, despite the fact that the cyclists had a greater calcium intake.

Bones will only strengthen when needed, if your bones take no loading then they will by their very nature degenerate, it's the body making itself more efficient. You need to get impacting on those joints to get bone density up.

    :) 4 pints....i do 1 a day, in the morning.

also a carrot or two a day, just helps my concentration levels on the road and a bit more reaction.

  • yeah running will help. weights. anything where the bones take a bit of impact.

  • Thanks for posting. My Mrs does complain when I loose bone, but now I know it happens to most cyclist I can tell her that wit h a clear conscious.

  • no; seems like pseudo science to me. that LA times artical has a daily mail feel about it, you've got to have more information than that to base your fears on.

  • What did the article say mick??

  • Being a student of Biomedical Science I must agree that without stimulus bone mass does decrease so yeah running/ impact exercise will increase your bone mass.

  • I notice that, when I'm surfing my legs kill when I'm getting up!! Better drink my milk!!

  • or you could jump down stairs and shit on your bike like the us cool cats

    see a doctor immediately

Not all Pumas, my best runners are Pumas.

I'm definitely getting some of these, don't think they'll be brought out on the bike though

  • see a doctor immediately

i should, but then theyll also brake it to me that both my feet are dislocated, five fingers and one toe. And that i have a damaged liver and ill need to go to rehab to fight my drinking problem.

Soon as i step foot into a hospital, there is no way im coming out feeling better than when i got in

  • i dont see how you bones could be effected?
arnt your joints and connective tissuses more likely to be at risk of damage?

  • ok i didnt read the low impact thing

  • well through my limited sports science knowlege, bones have a strength due to the size of muscle tissue that surrounds and connects to it, thus if you ride/train correctly you bones strength as well as your muscles should increase...
i did do a lot of research on this type of effect at uni but it was quite a while ago so please correct me if im barking up the wrong tree..

That's true, they do make running shoes too, all mine are the blahblahblahcat ones though, really thin soles on them, great if you're driving, not so much if you're running.

Got them signed by Schumi =D

Apologies for the irrelevance, had to throw that in there.

    burn him!

  • I did get my pic with Chris Hoy a few minutes previous if that makes it better =P

  • actually i think that modle of shoe is actually designed as a specific driving shoe.
