  • This thread is for all you folk who have wrecked parts on your bike, had major mechanical failures etc, that have either ended well or ended badly....tell your story here.

  • OK, here goes. Not a major horror story (I'm not telling you about the beautiful frame and forksI chucked on the tip in Deptford back in about 1996 when I didn't know any better - the memory of that still haunts me).

Beautiful Italian road bike with fluted top and down tubes in some special Columbus tubing; Campag Athena aero seatpost firmly stuck in place; many methods tried, including a chisel and hammer. Yes, gert big claw hammer misses end of chisel and re-designs the top tube just forward of the seatpost.

And the happy ending: I finally managed to saw out the seatpost without further damage and Mario Vaz worked his magic to leave me with a sparkly renovated frame.

  • I'll start with my past two weeks of bike destroying first, and so begins the tale of the disintegrating chain/stripped hub shell thread:
Well it started with a rather painful incident on clerkenfix road, I was riding along casually, cranked hard out of the saddle away from a set of lights, and within a split second my cranks suddenly lost all tension and spun nearly 3/4 of a turn before engaging again and throwing me over the bars towards the road with bike flipping over the top of me landing a few feet ahead, I was in a whole load of pain and thought I had broken my finger, I gashed up my arm pretty nicely also, still I picked my bike and myself up and sat on the pavement to collect myself, no breaks all good, I assume this is a cog/lockring tightness issue, so I see to this accordingly and tighten both, my back wheel was also badly bent and needed alot of beating/trueing.
Fast forward a week later, I have a low speed repeat of what happened before (it does however slip alot further this time) but since I am seated and not pedalling as hard it doesn't result in an accident, so that now clarifys that the hubshell thread on that side is screwed, I also had concerns that he chain may be damaged as well as I heard noises akin to the rollers starting to crunch a little when it slipped no problem I think, I put it down to the hub and just flip it over to the other side. So...i'm carrying on with my commute home get just over half way across London Bridge and hear a crunch from my chain, a couple of rollers go, and then pretty much 3 seconds later as I try to slow down, concerned that the chain is on its way out
(putting pressure on the chain of course), the whole thing disintegrates and flies off of my bike, forcing me to jam my back foot in the wheel to skid stop!

So in the space of 2 weeks I am up to half a hub, a new chain, and a rim thats had to suffer at my hands haha.

  • I was clipped by a car and my front brake somehow got caught on the car or was knocked off by the force. The brake lever broke and came off my handlebars, but was still attached to the brake cable and front caliper. The cable with broken lever swings down and hits my spokes. A split second later, I endo over the front my bicycle. I tuck and roll and land on my shoulder. Dislocated it.

All of this happened in one second, but I still see the sequence of events in my mind years later. Rather frightening.

  • I'll add mine when I've got an entire day!

  • I broke Max's tallbike on the halloween alleycat, by wheelying it and falling off. Still, it broke my right foot, so all's fair. I did another 12 miles with 2 broken metatarsals. And still didn't get the DFL prize.

And back in 2000 a light-jumping car smashed up my old cheap-arsed mountain bike, and my left ankle on Cambridge Heath Road. Then the now-unrideable bike got stolen from outside my house. Thieves are stupid. The bike was no loss, but I was out of action for 4 months, and didn't the LCC's suggested solicitor didn't even reply to my calls. In fact the driver tried to sue me. cunt.

  • People like that don't deserve to have money. They should see what it's like to not be able to afford to run a car and what other road users are like when they're on a bike.

I think any road user that hits a cyclist should be forced to travel by bike for at least a month, then they might be a bit more causious and give us the space and time we need.

    Rant over.

  • nope

  • I destroy parts on bikes not the bikes themselves.

  • I'm so strong that yesterday when tightening the rear track hubs on my beater I over tightened and broke the spacer and locknut in half. Nearly an inch of steel. Go me!

  • Good job Major! I think we need to invest in some Torque wrenches!

Jeezz major those things are supposed to be unbreakable aren't they??!!

  • Shitting hell, I think max is going for a bike destroyer world record!

  • my chain came off at the top of blackstock road while riding brakeless.

    Slackchain = death

  • I don't have enough time or inclination to try and remember every part I've destroyed.
Can I not just list which bones were broken by which bit of bike?

  • Jeezz major those things are supposed to be unbreakable aren't they??!!

Yeah, they are. But I'm actualy the Hulk. Not all the time. Just when I have to pay RLJ fines.

But seriously, I'm quite strong. I did one of those strong man tests where you hit a thing with a hammer and the other bit goes up and hits a bell. Well that bit hit the bell, smashed it in half, flew out the top of the tube, disappeared up, then came back down like 5 minutes later with a NASA satellite it had hit. Im just fucking silly strong.

You must be taking your bikes off some 'sweet jumps' for that kind of damage!

  • I don't have enough time or inclination to try and remember every part I've destroyed.

Your bikes should post about that in the Object Destroyer thread.

  • sweet polo

  • When i was 18, I got knocked off my bike by a HGV. The bike was folded in half.
My bike got pulled under the front wheel, throwing me forward - and spinning me round - so i landed on my head.
I fractured my skull, and now i can't taste or smell ANYTHING as a result.
That was nearly 12 years ago.
My "shit really don't stink" ha, ha

Oh, I put my front teeth through my upper lip, after hitting a car door that got thrown open, whilst i was at full speed. Stitches and false front teeth. Bent forks.
I've had a chainring embedded into my knee - snapped pedal - knee arthroscopy.
    And a few flats....

  • Your bikes should post about that in the Object Destroyer thread.
If you start the thread I'll ask my bikes to join up and slate me?

  • that fucking wanker max broke my charge plug.. dented the downtube with the brake and bent the brake bolt!
