I was thinking more Mercury Industries, of Birmingham. It's old, not one of those newer rebrands - though still could be a rebrand!
Mercury Industries (Birmingham) Ltd. was founded in 1947 and produced large numbers of bicycles, initially in Birmingham and then in Dudley; they made commercial delivery bicycles for Cyclemaster Ltd which, when fitted with an engine, became the 'Cyclemaster Roundsman.'I'll try and get a picture of it on the way to work this morning.

OK, so here are the pics. Looks like it isn't what I thought. Also seems to have been locked since I was last there! That all said, Mercury Industries made bikes for other people so it could have been there's made for Halfords. Who knows!
Has anyone ever heard of them? There is a Mercury sat out side my local Tesco. Been there for weeks. Unlocked. Abandoned. It's a smaller frame which would probably suit a lady or as a polo bike. Currently has a sturmey rear hub.
