i just playeda few times last year before it got too wintery to play. i am going to try to be playing a lot more this year, but i was hoping i could get some tips on setting up a good polo bike. sizing, gearing, bars, stuff like that.
sizing - smaller is usually better, ie lower saddle.
gearing - smaller people ride anything from 44" to street gearing, i recommend trying to get to about the 50-55 mark to start with.
bars - i go about shoulder width. mike, cohen, todd, all sorts go really narrow. hassan, object go quite wide.... JP plays with drops.just come play some more... talk at the court you'll find lots of people have more than enough good advice.
Ray.
ps check out the polo bikes thread and the polo gi thread its all there.

my bike is not made what so ever to be a polo bike, but it does the trick...after a month or so, i'm now aware of exacly what i need to do. i reckon just come out on what you have and feel it out.

In all seriousness emo:
DOn't make your mallet too long, IMO shorter is better than longer, you are at a lower centre of gravity while you dribble and its more wieldy. (not too short)
The boys are right about the relaxants though.^^^^^
Try to play without putting your mallet on your shoulder, if you begin and get into the habit of popping it on your shoulder when you sprint, you'll never get out of it.
Look up as often as possible when your dribbling.
Pass the ball, no one like a hog.
Drink another 5 beers, you'll be awesome.
Don't invite any girls on polo dates, you think they hurt themselves, when you go on a ride? You'll kill them during polo.
Clips and straps, not spd's.
Call your mallet something mythical. -

Why do you say no SPDs, B? I've done both (and am using clips and straps now) but will switch back as soon as I can. Did you not see me up against the fence with my foot having done that 180 spin at Newington a month or so ago? That wouldn't happen with clipless!

I'm gonna be making some mallets for the lads up here in Leeds. I used to work at a ski place so I'm tapping up a mate for some ex rental ski poles. Whats the best way of attaching the pole to the gas pipe? Seen some on here that look like it has a nail knocked through. Any tips?

Bolt through one end to the other of the mallet head (shuffle sides), going through the ski pole (so cut the pole in such a way that you get rid of the thinnest bit at the bottom).

nice one!

Longer mallets are better for stealing the ball, and absolutely ideal should you feel the need to yank Dale's front wheel from under him.
(Sorry Dale, it wasn't intentional, honest...)

Just like him blocking that goal with his hand wasn't intentional.

shorter mallets are easier to manovere or however you spell it. can also do a reach around easier.

flyingpig, there's a great 'how to build a polo mallet' video link somewhere ... i think i found it through bikepolo.ca. I'll see if i can find it again. I was thinking it would be a good thread to have here, there have already been some tips and photos of custom heads - i might pull together all the links and tips so far and post them.
