Close Clearances and Tyre Sizing

  • Hey all,

    Something's been bothering me...

My 650c fork will happily take my trispoke with tubular but not my 650c deep v clincher with 23c tyre.

I say it won't but that's when I pump it up hard. With about 80psi it'll just spin but is too close and not hard enough. When it goes over 80 it just sticks!

Fork is sprayed to match frame so don't wanna replace it.

So I was wondering what I can do.

Do some tyres have less depth? My current one is a michelin axial pro.
Would a 650x20 be any different?

    Any info much appreciated.

    thx

  • I had a similar problem with the forks on my Diamant - Rubino tyres were the answer in my case, they seem to have a lower profile (for want of a better term) and fitted just fine as opposed to Bontrager Hardcases I tried

  • Cool thanx man. I'll try another tyre and see how it goes.
    I think vittoria do a 650...
Been a while dude. Hopefully I'll catch you soon.

  • it's all varies on the tyres, I found I can finally barespin with Gatorskins for instance, what you have to be ware is those puncture-resistance tyres that have 'extra protection' which mean it'll be thicker despite being 23c.

at least that what I think.

  • Silly idea - would super-slim type tubes help? Vittoria do 19-23mm for about £2 odd on Parker.

Failing that, increase the tension on the spokes, it'll bring the rim in closer to the hub. :)

  • Yeah thanks ed. Though the michelin I have doesn't have a lot of puncture proofing.
I just ordered a rubino pro so I really hope that works. It's lame not being able to put enough air into my front tyre. The whole bike has tight clearances. Think it might not even manage a 25c rear due to closeness of the stays! So none of those big skid proof tyres...

Will look into both. Thx man.

  • A 650 x 20 should be lower as it is smaller all round.

  • money shot
    love it

  • Dreeeeeeedge!

    25c Maxxis Refuse. Nope.
23c Conti 4Seasons. Nope (I actually think these were worse than the Refuse).
Both of the above were on an Open Pro rim.

Are there any decent 20c tyres out there that are grippy and puncture proof? Or am I better off doing the ball bearing in the dropout thang?
