Isn't it the same as skier's hack? - air drying your lungs out. Ahh don't really know.
Apparently if you breathe through a thin layer it traps some of water vapour allowing you to breathe it back in again (recycle it)... or something... Oh and breathe through your nose... -

Wearing a Buff or a similar thin scarf over your face helps stop this. It warms the air before you breath it, stopping the cold from aggravating you lungs.

Are you a smoker?

I would guess not Tommy, I have the same problem myself, doesnt happen all the time but it did today. Very dry cold air might explain it.
I also drink lots of milk and dont think I could go without it....
Oh yeah and im asthmatic lol. -

inhaling all the fumes encourages the respiratory tract to produce more flegm than usual.
back in Wales i have no flegm compared to here in London. -

BMMF could be right, was for me, cut down on milk, though dairy products where the lactose has been "processed" like cheese or yoghurt are usually OK.... I used to cut out milk for four days leading up to an important event and just didin't worry about the phlegm when I was training or in smaller races.

milk/dairy 100% increases phlegm and catarrh. I always cut it out if I'm extra phglemy or if I've got a cold and I feel better much quicker than if I didn't.

are you staying hydrated? i am chronically underhydrated and i tend to get very phlegmy when riding. i've found keeping hydrated has helped out leaps with my gooey-ness.

I get masses of this. I am constantly blowing stuff out my nose. In the winter, its because of the cold air, in the summer, when its too hot its because of pollution. Its much worse after a big drink or eating the wrong types of food.
recently ive been developing what can only be described as excessive amounts of pleghm after riding for 2-3 hours.
it mainly attacks me when i stop riding, and i cough and splutter up phlegm for about half an hour before it declines. its really uncomfortable. the phlegm is clear, so i dont think i have any kind of infection.
ive only had this problem scince i moved to kent, never in cornwall.
has anyone else suffered from this? any remedy? i suspect it has somthing to do with heavy breathing in cold air, but i cant see how i would overcome this. im going to go to the doctor next week becuase its really begining to bother me.
