  • Anyone know where you can get a decent pie in London? I'm not talking about some insipid, flaccid lump from a "pie" and mash shop, i'm talking about a proud, handsomely flakey, richly-filled Northern pie.

  • newman arms off of percy st (W1) is not bad.

  • This is no help whatsoever (since they're in Birmingham), but I would honestly ride to Birmingham just to have one of these pies.

  • Not sure I'm able to judge what a good pie is (my experience is lacking when it comes to pies that are not fruit filled), but I've had and enjoyed Pie Minister...

  • "Urban Pies" may be the funniest thing I have ever heard of. I was disappointed that they weren't blinged up hip-hop pies in the shape of Uzis though.

  • Mothers Mash, Carnaby Street are ok for the money.

  • Get one of these bad boys and learn to make your own, that way you will never have to have another Cornish nasty in your life.

I made a Huntsman’s pie at Christmas and it tasted celestial

  • there is a pub in ealing called the red lion, that does a pie sunday every week, some loverly pies there.......sod the roast all the time.

  • Man I love pie.

  • fucking LOVE pies!

Of all people Will, given your Wigan heritage, I thought you would have tracked down a fine pie. Or perhaps you have them shipped down?

  • London Bridge station has a Pie shop just inside called PIE. pretty good but pastry is thick. but it's not "Proper". its much like Piemeister

Newman arms pies tend to have watered down gravy and puff pastry, but not bad flavour, but again the gravy should be thick it seamlessly and gradually merges into the pastry, but the pastry should remain crispy. ideally a shortcrust made with butter and lard for that crumbly flakey finish.

Manzies in Walthamstow is good but a bit of a tourist affair and the Pie and Eel shop by Shepherds Bush market is a real cocknaaaay effort,. cheap tasty but the pies wont win awards.

Mmm its a tough one... To be honest one of the best pies i have had in the smoke was from Square Pie.. ashamed to say it but they have it spot on

I was up north at the weekend and they had Pies in a hot box as bar snacks for £1.50..(not your £2.50 square bowl of nuts you get here!) and they were just amazing. London pubs are missing a trick!

  • Any Kiwi's on the forum? I believe they are partial to meat based crusty delight also.

  • Comprehensive Pip - you appear to have done your research - well done!

mmmm I visited a great pie shop when I was in Rotarua, savoury and sweet about 30 different varieties, my belly is rumbling now :-(

  • For good pies I visit the Butchers Hook & Cleaver which is a Fullers Pie and Ale pub.

Their pies are 531. Its at Smithfield.

    30!! WTF
There are three* pie fillings in the world. Meat, Meat and Onion and Apple. all others are fancy marketing ploys to hide poor cuts of meat. ignore them at all cost.

    • Fish pie only exists for use in crap man jokes
  • Get yersen down The Camel on Globe Rd E2 - vast array of tasty pies.

  • There's a wicked pie mob that goes to the French market in Sloane Square.
I'll try to find the name. They are the best pies I've had here.
If you've met me, you wouldn't believe it, but I LOVE pies.

    :)

  • Richie, what's the name of the pie shop on the way to margaret river? boss pies them…

  • Dunsborough Bakery.

    BEST pies in the world.

  • There's a chain of Aussie style pie shops open, one in Shé Bu and another in Norwood... There may be more, I'll find out from gf... I love pies... Don't know how I keep my svelte, girlish figure...

  • Curiously the pies at Wigan Athletic Football Club are the worst I have ever eaten.Northerners sometimes eat potato pies which are just not right. Norwich City FC has the best football pies.

Pies are a very traditional London dish. Pies taste best if home baked.

  • Dunsborough Bakery.

    BEST pies in the world.

Dunsborough pie, vanilla slice and an iced coffee - glorious!

  • Here's the skinny on the pie thing... I've heard they are really fucking good... Aussies and Kiwis have told me that, haven't had the pleasure myself yet... One east London location according to the site... They do frozen take-home stuff too...
