Yeah, the letters A and B seem to be the same tone. Yet the letter B seems to contrast more with the square its on.

get a couple of bits of paper (i just tore up a newspaper) and cover the adjascent squares so you're only looking at a nd b. it's the shadow of the cylinder that does it.
