  • I have a frame that has been stripped to its bare metal and need something to keep it that way from rusting.

Do I simply lacquer it? And which one would you recommend for metal?
Should I polish before getting it lacquered?

any suggestions or experience will help ;)

  • Brasso it up and then get spraying with a regular spray lacquer

  • The welds will look awesome.

  • sweet, cheers, its lugged though so the only visible welds are where i took off the braze ons

still im sure itll look better than getting it primed in some shitty colour, its all about the rough look

  • get armourtex to sandblast it with a fine glass beads. then quickly spray it with lacquer.

  • its getting sandblasted, but ill polish before i lacquer it

  • the polish will interfere with the lacquer, especially in the corners where the residue is next to impossible to remove.

it will still tarnish over time anyway, so if u want to acheive a shiny silvery finish get it chromed.

  • im not going for mirror shiny shiny, just polished metal look....ill get som brasso and some spray lacq and we'll see what happens

  • Eddie, the sprayed laquer on bare metal has little to key onto and blooms in the cold and damp (i.e now) and falls off easily. Try brush on laquer and do loads of coats in a hot room (and get HIGH) but i'll rust anyway and then you can pretend you meant it to be like that .
Check out Febs bike now from when it was first done

  • clean up with white spirit then meths (clean rag an old toothbrush for nooks and crannies)then drink leftovers before laquering. Results will look cooool!H + S warning -better disregard this *---*bit

  • if you are getting it blasted, you will not be able to polish it up, it would takes weeks, blasting gives a very grey matt finish.

  • Leave it as is, but give it a wipe down with an oily rag every week or so. It should seal the metal and also leave it with a natural patina. I tried everything when I had a bare metal frame, but in the end, a lot of careful attention and TLC was the only way to keep it looking the way I wanted.

  • I sometimes wish I'd left my bike in the naked way it came into this world:

    but i love the plaid.

  • if only they Armourtex did a clear powder coat

  • if only they Armourtex did a clear powder coat

they do, but the frame still has to be treated before.

see my post above, blasted then clearcoated.

  • omg thats really cool...

thats definately a millions times better option than painting with lacquer.

thankyou, bigger pic, on my profile page:)

  • i have also stripped my frame to bare metal, was gonna just spray the lugs light blue and use hammerite clear for the rest of the frame

    anyone used it?

  • Hi,

I'm also thinking of stripping my frame and am all for the nice'n'shiney look. where is it possible to get a frame chromed?

  • it costs alot and it's hard to find someone with a big enough bath to dip the whole frame.

  • what if you just want the lugs done?

  • google??

  • Google can chrome lugs?

  • Doesn't Armourtex do laquer coat? Wont that go onto shiny metal? Or is shiny out??

Eddie - keep us updated - would be good to know how things go!!

True. We had a frame (Dursley pederson anyone?) Nickel plated for a customer. Took it to our powder-coaters to have it stripped in their tank. Ben forgets, blasts it. WE (IE my colleague Tony) spend 3 days rubbing it back with different grade emry, eventually got it plated, cost a fair amout, over 200 beans, but it is possible if you feel the perversion.

I am lusting after a chrome lugged 1920's style road frame, with rusty tubes a 3spd hub, semi-dropped bars and possibly even a 'tash..

    Clearcoat powdercoat sounds pimp though.
