I've not owned a Pacer, but based on my experience of a Steamroller and a Cross Check, I reckon you're pretty spot on. A Pacer won't be the lightest bike you'll ever own, but it'll build into a really nice general purpose geared road bike that's ideal for all year round use if you choose to fit mudguards. It'll tend to be comfortable and suited for cruising rather than out and out sprinting so if you don't race, then perfect!
Give BrRixton Cycles a call and speak to Simon, he has one.

the Pacer is slightly heavier than the Steamroller (very slightly), add a groupset and it'd be noticeably heavier, thought that all I know really.

Oh, and given recent increases in cycle parts, your £1000 limit may be in danger.
I'm thinking about building up a Surly Pacer this year.
Does anyone have one? If so, how do you find it and what kind of equipment did you build it with? I'm thinking silver Veloce groupset, but not sure about wheels.
I'm thinking I'd need £1,000
My logic is that I love the feel/fit/ride of my Steamroller, so a geared bike that is closely related would suit me well. I figure it would be good for commuting and long rides but not so sprightly for 20k triathlon dashes. At my venerable age I probably shouldn't worry too much about a few extra pounds frame weight :0)
Or should I be looking for an aluminum or carbon OTP that's lighter and will cost a few hundred quid less?
Thanks
