Which pedals for canoeist?

Posted on
  • HI folks some opinions please, I want to get some powergrips and while I'm at it want some new pedals that they can go on. I've got size 12 feet so wanted something a bit bigger but that i won't have pedal strike issues with. Was thinking about the shimano dx or similar but would these be a nightmare to flip into the right position, as they aren't really made to be used with clips or similar? kthxbai

  • I wouldnt be worrying about pedal strike to ground. Id be worrying about pedal strike to shins.

    Shimano DX's = Ouchies!

I ran some Platform Pedals with huge pins on, temporarily when I built my first fixed. It was lethal, ended up wearing shinguards.

  • Platforms with removable pins and take the pins out the bottom!!

  • yeah i think i want platforms but which ones to go for? i want them in black and no more than 50 quid max. why do you recommend taking the pins out the bottom, i don't tend to ever hit my shins on my pedals.

  • Try DMR V12

    £51.99 (a little over budget)

    or the V8

    £27.99

  • yeah i saw those, what is the advantage of the 12's over the 8's and would they work with powergrips? better than shimano's?

  • I used to run these with clips...£15... nothing wrong with that...

  • I got size 13 feet and same prob but sorted now. You can get clips on the Odyssey pedals (v similar to DMRs), but it's a bugger to file the right sized hole in the clips as its made of that super-tough nylon plastic - get one of those drill bits that has a Dremel-style cutting edge on it. I would recommend taking some of the pins out as if your foot is going into a clip AND you got pins in keeping your foot there, it can be a pain to get it back out in a hurry...

Also you'll still get really wet toes if you go through puddles ;)

  • If you want to spend less the Gusset Slimjims come in around £30 for sealed bearings.
I've got a pair on my BMX and a pair on my polobike (with powergrips), plenty grippy on both and to be honest I'll throw a pair on my mountain bike too if when I break the current pedals.

  • I had a pair of DMR V8s on an old hybride bike. I would recommend them I liked the grease port, and the overall shape held the foot quite well even without straps/clips

  • hey object those slimjims look good, are the pins removable doesn't seem to say on the site i saw them on?

  • ^ ignore that, yes they do, they also come in some mental neon colours!!
