ok, i only met 1 good drummer ever and he tore the house down with his 12 piece drum kit.
Frankly he was incredible....
everyone since then is either learning or whatever but aren't actually an experienced weathered drummer.Just a bit cultish..... in a good way slaytanic, in a good way.

12 piece??? that's ridiculous! I play the old one rack, kick and floor set up. I insist on vintage kits too and vintage cymbals (except crashes). They have to be zildjian :)

yea, but haven't been in a band for a while. i used to have this old kit, some australian brand, looked like shit but sounded beautiful. 15" new beat high hats, 21" K ride, and 17" and 19" crashes, one was a z custom, the other a K dark crash or something. best snare i had was this 8" maple thing.
fave drummers:
dude from karate
dude from gospel (bitch must have had 3 arms)
bonz
nick from big heavy stuff -

i like to beat my skins now and then. ho ho! either mine or hired in a sweaty basement rehearsal room. ho!
i'm pretty green. been meaning to learn the true basics like reading and all the jargon, but my neighbours hate me practicing even with silencers. doh. but i guess i've been playing for about 10 years in dribs and drabs. love it. -

I've yet to meet a very good drummer that isn't at least one or all of the following:
flaky
egotistic
a right-on hippy with double standards (ie: in reality a violent psychopath)
a drug addict
in too many bands
lives miles away from everyone else in the band
looks like a nerd (and not in an ironic way) -

i've yet to meet a bad drummer who didn't insist on some esoteric kit before he'd play.
the good pros just play what they're given.

at the end of the day, it all sounds like someone going postal in John Lewis' kitchenware dept.
and when mic'd at a big gig, it all sounds like a medicine ball rolling around in the back of a pickfords truck

Oh, FFS.
what do you mean FFS? I've had 13 years of experience and played a lot of kits and cymbals. Modern stuff (besides hardware), is shit and overpriced.

Vintage all the way. A decent kit will age nicely if it's kept well and the sound definitely improves with age, something you don't get unless you go for top end newer stuff like Orange County.
I play a late 60's UK Rogers which is the best sounding kit I've ever played. I had it refinished in blue oyster pearl wrap and have standard 22, 16, 12 sizing. All hardware is new and a mix of Pearl and DW.
I use either a 1950's Ludwig Mahogany snare if I want something light and snappy, or a converted Premier marching snare in green sparkle finish, tuned really tight so it's got an amazing deep, tight crack to it. That baby's 9 inches deep ......
Cymbals are 13" Sabian HH EQ Hats, 16" Alchemy Sweet Crash, 16" Zildjian A Custom Crash and a juicy 20" Sabian Medium Flange Ride from the 70's.
Has taken me 20 years to get that lot together and I love it all.

sounds an amazing set up you have! Before I became skint some time ago, I had 14" zildjian a hats from the 60s, a late 60- early 70s ziljian a 20" ride, zildjian 19" k custom hybrid crash (fucking amazing crash) and a 19 " paiste 2002 power crash. I had what I believed to be a premier elite, possiblöey late 60s. The badges were all different though. I still have some where a 60s premier royal ace, which is fucked (parallel action strainer is dodgy) and I once owned a keystone badge ludwig acrolite snare, 65 i think it was dated. Way too dry.
Currently building up my kit again. My 50s zildjian a ride, 22", is the best ride i've ever owned and possibly the loudest!!! -
