Which brooks for everyday use?

  • im tempted to buy a brooks saddle for my commute
    after all ive heard about them
    im just wondering which one would be more suited
    its not a long journey only 8 miles each way

  • I use a female version - works well with my wide sit-bones (and was free).
    Just buy a B17 or B17 narrow depending on your size.

  • im a big guy around 17 and a half stone
    so i guess a b17 then chop it

  • if you chop, it might flop a bit more... Skully can advise.
    Try and lace it?

    he says only after it flops after many thousands of miles use but i suppose if your modding it in such a way it could be beneficial
    i know its really just about looks but it wudnt suit my modern bike

  • B17s don't much suit modern frames IMHO. If you've got the cash and prepared to be patient to break a good saddle in, what about a team pro as a long term investment?

  • soak the leather in neatsfoot oil, both sides, and ride in old jeans, gets real comfy quick

    the team pro takes awhile to break in.
    much thicker leather.

    mmm - it won't suit your bike, it'll weight 3/4 of a ton, and it'll be really uncomfortable, and you'll have to tilt the front of it up to stop yourself sliding off.
    take my advice, don't bother with brooks

  • any other modern saddle. which one suits you is something no one can tell you, but you can borrow them or try them out or buy one and sell it on ebay if no good.

    i changed from a brooks to a Fizik Arione and have had no troubles. or the Specialized Toupe is very good, or some people swear by Flites...

  • Nimhbus has made a good contributon! Ariones are excellent, well suited to modern looks, light, and comfy. Brooks often feel set too far forward for modern geometry of frames, work much better on relaxed old angles, and were designed when that was the norm. But if your bike is in any way long for you this may not be a problem.

    If you want a hide saddle, and don't want to ride for ages to break it in, you might sonsider buying an old ish one that looks a bit sagged, and block it out yourself. This isn't hard at all. Then you will have a soft saddle, ready to reform to your shape. Team Pros are notoriously hard when new. They say (whoever 'they' are) black brooks are harder than tan ones, brown in between. Not sure how true this is. I have a Black Team Pro that is seriously hard still, after a good few hundred miles. Apparently sweating into the saddle is key, perhaps I'm just too lazy.

    As Nimhbus says, if you don't like the feel something you've bought, sell it on at near-cost price, someone will appreciate a small saving on a nearly new saddle. Ride it for more than 30 miles to get a good idea of how it rides, you really can't tell on short rides.
