Anyone got a headset press I can borrow ? - Ruislip area, i'll pick up etc & it's worth a drink

Another far westie, if you are planning on making it to west drinks on a thursday night there are a bunch of us riding from uxbridge who are always looking for more people to ride with.

Make your own.

Long bit of 10mm threaded rod, two bolts and two large washers - get the lot from Hombase/Wickes/B&Q (etc) for a few pounds.

Took the frame up to the LBS and for a fiver they did it with me. Much better than using a homemade bodge on a thirty five quid headset. I've also seen the hammer merchants on u-tube - have they no respect for their bike ?

Not that difficult to make.
threaded rod
Washers x 2
Bolts x 2
Sheet of hardwood.

Cut two large discs out of the hardwood using drill + attachment.
Then cut out two smaller discs which fit snug inside the lips of the headset (for centering, good idea to sand a bit to protect bearing races)
Assemble as below.

(Note that the headset is only ever in contact with wood and therefore will not be scratched, and the centering action of the inner wooden discs prevent slipping and possible headtube damage)

Is £5 to install fairly typical? Is there a tricky bit to putting a bearing on the fork steerer too?

You need to instal a crown race onto the fork steerer.

I used a massive metal pipe, that I found at work, which had the correct inner diameter. You need to be able to hammer on the crown race without damaging the part the bearings will run on.
If you are using a lot of force it is a good idea to add support under the fork crown in the form of a piece of wood (not just resting the legs on the floor).

Stressful but not difficult

I tried to do this but I couldn't find the correct washers in either homebase, b&q or screwfix.

Wickes has them, but it's in Stirling (too far away for me).

Now I have lots of threaded rod going to waste- what to do with it?

Instead of washers use some pieces of wood (with a nice flat surface) and drill a hole in them.

Surely you have wood up in Scotland ?

The square washers from Unistrut look like they would work too if you have access to that?

i could get my headset press back by wednesday if anyoine needs it

when you change a headset for a friend or yourself every once in a while ( 10 years or so ) these home made tools will do .
but when you work as a mechanic as i do . with so many different types of headsets / bottom brackets / cups / models /and sizes there is nothing like the

I took today off to fit a new headset, forks and V-brake with my lbs, only to find he's on holiday. I need to do this on the cheap and my lbs does my bike stuff and I do his graphics.

Is there anyone SE who can help me get my headset in?
