Swaged cranks, win or fail?

Posted on
  • I am thinking about using a set of swaged cranks (sr custom) on my fixed bike. They are currently on my s/s freewheel bike where they have been for year and have performed faultlessly. They have been used occasionally for riding fixed in that time but not for long.

My worry is that if i put them on my fixed bike and use them constantly for riding fixed the back and forth stresses resisting and skidding put on the cranks will quickly knacker the interface between ring and crank arm. Anyone had experience using swaged cranks on a fixed?

for those that don't know what swaged means.

  • I used some swaged cranks for ages, frame gave up before the cranks did.

Do not think there is anything to fear about bonding coming undone, you may notice flex in the chainring though.

  • I used some swaged cranks on my Bianchi conversion for 6 months with no problems but I dont skid stop, so not sure this really helps you :-(

  • I use swaged cranks on one of my bikes. Really cheap ones too. Skid all the time, never had any problems.

  • no problems, but didn't like them one bit

  • Thanks for the replys guys, seems like i can go ahead and swap the cranks over. Im sure they won't feel all that great but its bound to be ebtter than the couple mm movement im getting from my bmx cranks and sprocket at the moment.
