1 or 3, i prefer 3 personally
-
• #3
definitely number 1.
mugs in background
good facial expression
bike is secondary
less distracting detail
more of a feel for the space he's in -
• #4
1 or 2, although 2 has an o'neil logo slap bang in the middle... maybe get rid of that it's kinda the first thing i looked at...
like you said all the others have saddles growing out of his head...
-
• #5
I hate no.2 because of the o'neill logo too
dunno why i even processed it!
-
• #6
Really this is proof that better lighting doesn't make up for poor composition
-
• #7
definitely number one.
number three you're right, the saddle is a problem in the composition - affects number four and five too, though in those the Corima logos are a bit too dominant if it's not about Corima.
number two looks okay at first glance but what he's doing looks a bit inconsequential because it's all about the O'Neil jumper. He looks like he's at an evening class, might be the kind of photo the government would use for a pamphlet about adult learning.
So number one!!

oh right yea just clocked its about the person not the bike and photo 1 is the only one that really shows his emotion and character

I agree Messenjah - No.1
By the way, is that Alistair? -
• #10
the bottom or top one.
his eyes are looking at what he is doing so although he's not engaging with the camera he's doing something so your eye goes from face to hands and you get that he's a 'doing' person.
2nd one is an awkward pose, he's looking out of frame and despite having his hands on the bike not really interacting with it.
3rd one has the saddle too close to his face and doesn't give space around his head to breath (visually)
4th is a bit contrasty and overlit his face is all deep shadows.
i would prefer to see them without the crops and the odd angles, i don't think it does your images any favours. -

He is great ain't he Mr Smith - I have got my eye on a little camera - with a mind to learn a thing or two about photography
-
• #12
No 1
-
• #13
personally, 5. not sure if it's intentional but I like the way the viewer's eye will move around the image.
edit: mrsmith already said this !

no 2 or no 5
hides the geezers bald spots
he'll thank you ..:)

• #15
3 methinks
-
• #16
for me its number 5

I agree Messenjah - No.1
By the way, is that Alistair? Its adrian from sprockets innit.
I think without any doubt number 1.
He has a cheerful expression in his face and no silly logos interfering. The image is clearly about a man who works in a bike shop.
The light glare looks good too.
(Adrians bike is kinda odd/intimidating, an epicly huge corima with mega wide straight bars & now a brooks too?)

None of them are cropped. I do prefer not to use odd angles, but it was the only way I could fit what I wanted into the frame and keep the things I didn't want out.

number 1 is the best so far, the rest of the photo look like he's just holding a bike for a couple second, especially the saddle one.
-
• #21
Number 1. But who is going to be publishing them? If it's for the local rag, it might be to good for them, they would prob go for 2 as you can see his face.

first one

lol 'published'! As if! No-one would publish them even if I paid them to!
Well, yeah I suppose they will be published - but on my Brum fixie blog. Looks like I'll use no.1. I'm gonna do some riding shots first though, I'll post the results here next weekend

1 or this new one of him riding. If he is a sponsor, it makes sense to the article to see him actually riding.
I'm gonna interview the LBS owner who sponsored Brum's first alleycat. Which one of these pics do you think I should use? They weren't intended to be a series,so ignore the fact that the background exposure is different in some of them. I keep seeing faults in all of them for example the saddle stuck to his head in no. 3. I'm thinking of using no.1 because although his face is a bit underexposed, the logo's on the bike aren't as prominent
disclaimer: I have a really slow computer that takes about 2 minutes to let me preview the effects that any Curves adjustments will have, so I just guess.
edit: pics removed innit
