Sounds like a tramp has been sleeping in your BB shell, does it stink of pee?
-
• #3
Don't, whatever you do, take it out, it'll cause the frame to snap.

I am going with P!MP's tramp theory.
Look for tiny empty cans of Tennents Super.
-

And shit.
Yeah, thats right, behind my Halfords, the Bromley tramp had a shit.

Not that I know much, but out of curiousity what do you mean when you say "inside the bb shell"?
Was it just crumpled up in the middle? Or actually laying over the threads?
Just wondering whether it was being used as some kinda crazy shim/ptfe tape to bodge a undersized bb cup in there.

The cup won't be the wrong size, it's all standard, only variance is the threading, italian etc. If that was the case, some crazy fool might have threaded/completely fecked the bb and used paper to stick it in with damaged threads.
Or it could be a message from the past! I like to write on the tape that holds cables to the bars before i put the bar tape on, good fun.

Ah, i think you may be right about that fat pants, my bad. It's been a long day, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
I like the idea about a message from the past. I too have written under stickers and also inserted rolled business cards into my bikes many orifices as an attempt to prove ownership in the event it gets stolen and (hopefully) recovered.

I'm afraid i can't fit my nose in the shell, could well smell of pee.
It is about 5mm thick and wrapped around the outside of the inside of the shell.

I'm sure i remember reading recently about wrapping old axles with plastic to help prevent water ingress on older style unenclosed BBs, maybe your piece of card was soaked in oil before being fitted into the shell to help prevent this? Or maybe I'm just talking shit!

A friend of mine told me that his daughter had found a hole in the ground on Primrose Hill - with a little wooden lid on the top - it's very hidden and very very hard to find - inside the hole (around a couple of feet deep) was a tube, and inside that tube was a smaller box - and inside that box was a small book and a pencil.
As I live around the corner from the hill he gave me directions, it's really hard to find, if I remember right it's so many steps from a certain tree going North, then so many steps towards another tree and so on . . .
Anyhow, one night, I managed to find it, it was very very strange, the book was full of the names of people who had found the box, a few business cards and a few weird trinkets, I put my name in the book and stuck it all back.
I had almost forgot about it completely until your post reminded me.

I've had this before and always thought it must be a corrosion prevention thing.

Perhaps the previous owner forgot to remove the BB from its box before installation? This happened with our television.

I need matches. I like fire.
Have just managed to finally get the stuck bb cup off of a '58/9 holdsworth i am sending to Mercian and from what i can tell, there is cardboard / paper inside the BB shell.
Is this usual? or should i just rip it out...
