Tools for stripping an old Road bike

Posted on
  • Hi All,

Im attempting a conversion on an old Raleigh Sun Solo, but would like to get myself so tools which would be upto the job of stripping everything off the frame.

Do i need any bike specific tools to remove the BB etc?

I have a chain breaker and other general maintence aswell as a tool kit capable of tearing apart cars.

    thanks

  • a bottom bb tool would be good, type varies on your type of bb

  • not a clue what i have?

Can anyone help (and yes i have lots to learn im aware)
pics of bike, but not of BB!

  • I assume you have a crank extractor?

You might run into some trouble if you need to replace the headset. However if the cups aren't pitted then you'll not need to remove them from the frame (unless of course you are thinking of a respray also). Have a look at: http://www.londonfgss.com/thread12909.html
I am in the process of constructing a DIY headset press and I'll post some photos if I manage it (next couple of days).

  • If you can take your time on the build I'd recommend it. You can buy tools as and when they're needed and avoid unnecessary purchases.

Other than that, borrowing tools FTW (look at http://www.londonfgss.com/thread2775.html although I'm not sure if that's up to date)- maybe ask people to bring tools to drinks/ polo sessions and buy them a beer in exchange- I've found all forum people to be generous.

  • Get yourself a crank extractor and you'll most likely have a BB which needs one of these

  • Looks to me like something such as the Hozan lockring spanner would get that BB lockring off (http://www.hubjub.co.uk/etc/etc.htm) and would double up to tighten the lockring on the fixed hub you'll be buying shortly...

  • I just converted an old 1970 Falcon, and have the same crank set up, you need the crank puller (for a fiver off ebay), but I haven't actually done that part yet. It was a real bitch to get the cassette off becasue it was buggered the last time it was taken off. With a hammer and punch, and some almighty whacking you can dismantle the cassette on the wheel then unscrew the core in a strong vice preferably. I just made it single speed not fixed, but good luck!

  • I have a similar raleigh and my crank extractor from this toolkit http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/LifeLine_Workshop_Tool_Kit/5360031531/ didn't work on it. just so you know.

    good luck

  • Looks like you will need a lockring tool, a pin wrench or hammer and nail punch and a crank extractor, buy them as you need them. most of the basic tools cost under 20 notes each. once bought they should last you many years.

  • Looks like you got steel wheels, rusty ones at that. Put that on upgrade priority.

  • So the plan now is to stip of what i can, then take the bike to the lbs and ask them to remove the bb/crank (im sure theyll do it for free).

I still havent decided if im going to throw a little money at it, ie £300 which would get me new bars, seat post, second hand wheelset and running gear (cranks etc.) or to go the cheap route and find freebies.

Im going to attempt to vinyl cover the frame first though!

Good luck with that - my LBS would probably charge for changing a pedal if I'd bought the pedals.

There's a few people on here that will lend you tools / help you out with this if the LBS falls through, myself included.

  • I think for £300, or a little more, you could get a decent OTP. You can find cheap, decent parts here, on ebay and elsewhere. Best source of information on fixed gear conversions is sheldon brown.

  • Most good bikes can be stripped and reassembled with just a gun and a magnifying glass.

  • Get one of those cheapish tool kits, you'll get basics of most of the things you need. If you aren't going to re-use the BB and cranks then a cold chisel and a hammer will get them off, just remember to make sure you are bashing the BB lock ring in the right direction.

Rumour has it that Sheldon could strip and reassemble a bike using just his mind.
