  • Thinking of investing in a pair of tights or 3/4 lengths. Have done a quick search on here and not found any chat. Any advice or recommendations? Cheers.

  • I bought myself a set of Canterbury compression tights and so far I've loved them.. They add some comfort and keep me warm..

I got them mainly for keeping myself warm whilst rugby training but they've doubled up well..

  • with or without pad? tights are usually just lycra tights with no pad. the naming is all a bit confusing 'knickers' are 3/4 length, tights are full length with no bib, bibs are bibs but they could be bib 3/4's.
shorts are shorts but there are also bibshorts but bibshorts always have a pad. biblongs come with or without pad. so you could wear biblongs over padded bibshorts (like i do in this cold weather).

    confused? :-)

  • yeah you could just list what you own and what you use it for... tights to keep warm and medium length rides as above^

3/4 length padded shorts longer rides/ all day poloness

bibs im yet to experience... was on the christmas list.

  • Decathlon ftw.

Jobs a good'un. They waterproof? Fancy gettin a pair for under jeans

  • I just bought 3 pairs of lyrca tights from M+S for 8gn... bargains bruv

  • Skiing skins ftw

About £60 but warm as anything, breathable crotch and they apparently help muscle recovery

  • Ed fuck me mate £60!!! flash git.

  • I just use leg warmers + shorts. Add womens tights or poly propolene base layer if on long cold routes.

In other news. Wow. Decathlon has finally sorted out it's website

  • 3/4 Bibs are awesome.

  • And you can keep on without having to change for The Blue Oyster

  • I rate these Endura bibs for current types of temperatures.

  • i have 3 pairs of bibshorts. assos and posh adidas use them in summer and add knee warmers for mornings or autumn riding down to about 10°
windproof/showerproof cannondale longs for rides of 9° or lower
cheap lusso roubaix unpadded biblongs to wear over the shorts for the weather we are having now.
ideally i need a pair of mid weight bib3/4's for the chilly autumn/spring rides as kneewarmers and shorts are fine but my backside gets cold
i have 2 pairs of unpadded trek and decathlon tights that i only use to wear under jeans when standing around on location or on the mtb, i guess i could wear them over my bibshorts on the road but i like bibs that keep your lower back warm.

tights don't need to be expensive i think the decathlon ones were only £16 but if you want padded shorts/bibs then it's worth going for assos/upper range cannondale/giordana/adidas.

Got me a pair of these too and they are great, nice and warm in all types of wet and windy conditions.

  • i have a 3/4 bib shorts with padding, and to be honest never use the straps bit, always have them rolled down, lucky the pants don't fall down but if you have a choice with or without, i'd recommend without the bib bit if you spend long times in your cycle gear and might be drinking beer.
Also it's better to go for the non-padded tights and pants - this way you use padded shorts underneath, but as they're cheaper you can afford more and change them like you would change underwear - daily- while keeping the outer layer.

  • top tip about the shorts/warm bibtights. having more pairs of padded shorts you can rotate them in the summer and winter and wear the warm biblongs over them without having to wash the warm longs after each ride. if they were padded you would need several pairs for winter and summer

  • I just use leg warmers + shorts.

    +1

I figured I can use shorts all year round and in the winter just add leg warmers when necessary. My gore thermopower leg warmers were one of my best purchases last year, keep me nice and warm.

  • I bought a pair of Pearl Izumi bib longs from Primera Sport over Christmas. While they don't have the loops at the ankle to keep them held down, I've found them to be my single most pleasing bike purchase of the winter. They're fleece lined, the cut's pretty good, padded insert - lovely.

When I get in from a long ride I can't bear to take them off.

Hard to wee in them though...

Sorry - that should read 'hard to wee when you're wearing them'.

    Or something...

not if you are a skinny racing snake i get a frozen backside this time of year if i wear summer shorts.

  • I bought a couple of pairs of thermal Endura bibs in the US last winter. Although they don't have pads they are very thick and don't need the added comfort. They are wonderfully warm. The brace bits have clasps so they can be undone and removed easily. They are really rather good and were cheap when the dollar was.

  • I got 2 pairs. One for summer and a winter pair.
Winter ones are water repellent and have become my new polo attire.
They're Endura and were about £40. They do a waterproof pair but they're £90.
