  • Saw this in another thread - what does it mean?

I mean, I am just getting into single speed because I can't be arsed with gears or maintenance and cost and want to get bloody fit.

Is there a whole craze in London of twats in London doing this and living in the East End, etc, - is this a Hipster?

Where did the obsession/fashion come from? Why?

  • "Search"... up there ^^^^... use him or he gets lonely.

  • If I had potatoshop skills I'd get the pope in some skinny jeans with an HHSB whilst handing out the body and blood of christ etc etc..

  • Is there a whole craze in London of twats in London doing this and living in the East End, etc, - is this a Hipster?

It was started by Alice Fisher, of the Guardian.

  • "Hipster" is a term that derives from the user-name "hippy" who occasionally posts on here as well as on numerous other forums. A "hipster" is someone who follows hippy who is a well know Australian cyclist now living in West London. Hipsters seek to mimic his style and athleticism and often, like him, ride fixed wheel bicycles.

Anyone who rides fixed wheel bicycles in the style of hippy is a hipster.

    Now you know.

    Lol'd.

  • Well paul-michael, if you're just getting into single speed because you can't be bothered to maintain gears and want to get fit, then why the hell should you care if a group of people called hipsters also ride them?

Hipster is the name given to the younger generations these days (a la punk/mod/rocker etc), and is a derogitory term, which is unusual, because in the past young people have embraced the social appellation their elders have given them, even when the elders use it as an insult.

It is a sign of the insecurity and apathy of young people, as your own insecurity regarding this issue demonstrates. :)

  • the term hipster is a bit of an oxymoron,

originally used to describe ultra cool 'hip' jazzsters, and more recently around year 2000 era to describe those who wore tight jeans & chucks. Basically anyone moderately a bit indie.

But the most recent outing of the word, the one used here means basically the same as 'poseur' a purely derogatory term.

See Nathan Barley for better explanation. A lot of these poseur types have latched onto the track bike in da city thing in a big way.

  • Seems to me that if you have a nice bike, wear even moderately slim cut pants and don't wear sidi's, you get labelled a 'hipster'

  • That's because you are a hipster. :P

  • Anyone riding a bike who isn't clipped in and doesn't have a fluoro vest or bag of shopping is a hipster.. especially the ones talking about hipsters on here. ;)

  • My sister told me a hipster was a pair of trousers that sit low on your hips

I wear an outfit like this including flouro vest, it clearly shows I am not a hipster:

  • They don't have hiphopfixiebikes.. ergo, they are not hipsters.

    is it that derogatory though?

I don't think it is, on here, the way I see it, it's just a descriptive word for a trendy young person who owns a bike.

much like in cycling labeling someone a "roadie", or in music calling someone a "punk" or "metaller"

  • Except everyone knows roadies and trackies are better than posing hipsters ;)

  • I've always seen it as derogatory. But thats because people shout it at me after they've spat in my face

  • I usually shout it before spitting in their face but I guess each method has its pros/cons.

  • People who are all style and no substance.

  • Well that wil be half of London then

  • 93.2% actually, TSB.

  • there's not that much style in London

  • I think they used to call them 'trendies'

  • I still use that term
