Rear Cog Problem

Posted on
  • So just got my new H+Son wheels built by Arup (fantastic job - see pics) on the bike with a new 18t EAI cog on the rear. Problem is when I put the chain around the cog it doesn't want to sit properly in it. Will only sit in a couple of the gaps between the teeth. What the fuck is wrong ?

Am I missing something stupid ? The front is a 48 if that helps....and I'm sure that it's 1/8 as the old one and new one is

Any help appreciated as it driving me crazy as I just want to take it out for a spin.

    Cheers

  • Chain stretched?

  • +1 chain stretch.

    Cool lacing pattern btw

  • can you post a picture of it not fitting?

  • are you trying to put a 3/32" chain on a 1/8" drive?

  • It's a 1/8 chain I'm pretty sure. Will take a picture of the chain on the cog. Back in a minute....

  • taps fingers on desk waiting

  • is that spanish laced?

  • There you go. It's a hybrid crows foot on the rear and radial front. Both 32's

  • it's an old chain isn't it?

  • is that spanish laced?

I think they call it crows foot

  • are you trying to put a 3/32" chain on a 1/8" drive?

    you are.

and remember, there are multi speed chains that are even narrower that 3/32" ss chain.

you need to get a new 1/8" track or BMX chain.

I say that because it looks like the bushings are not even sitting down in the groves because the teeth are too fat to let the plates run over them.

  • in the olden days chain links used to be longer, 1" and they've slowly brought it down to 1/2" that looks like the old chain i used to use but that was on old sprockets and chain rings.

there for you need a new chain.

  • Well it's not a new chain, but not that old. Is that all it is ? Need a new chain.

  • Ok so new chain should fix the problem. Will it then end up doing the same thing to the front chain ring with the new chain ?

  • Thanks everyone will get down to the bike shop in the morning...

  • Will it then end up doing the same thing to the front chain ring with the new chain ?

only if the chainring is badly worn

  • best to change chain, cog and ring all at the same time

  • It looks really nice, I was thinking of this…

  • 3 lead 3 trail does look ace. esp on the front. my mate built one at london fields it looks absolutely wicked. DO IT!

  • They ARE different coloured spokes aren't they? It's not just my fucked vision.

Oh yeah, 3/32 chain on 1/8th cog FAIL. Had to be done.

  • yeah, white grey and black. it was on the london fixed gear flickr. My mate got one built up at Condor with the same pattern, looks great, spoke are sooo tight on it though…

  • I think they call it crows foot
