Can you post a bike without a box?

Posted on
  • I bought a bike a while back on ebay and it was collection only, i arranged with mates to go collect it from Worcester and twice they have backed out saying they don't have time. I am looking at getting an ebay ban or something if i can't pick it up and the buyer is refusing to post so i am wondering if a courier company would pick it up off him if it wasn't in a box?

    Any ideas?

Or, anyone live round that way and coming up to Manchester in the next few days, long shot i know?

  • Never used them but people on a BMX forum rate them. Not sure about the box issue but drop them a line and ask. Prices seem to be reasonable.

  • I'd be more nervous about the fact the seller's backed out of the collection twice...

  • @mooks - I read snoops post as saying his mates had backed out of collecting the frame rather than the seller.

yeh you're right. I really want the bike, and had arranged with a mate to collect it before i bid, then he said he couldn't do it. arranged with another mate, he said he couldn't do it. and here i am now; sans bike, avec pending ebay ban and pissed off.

  • Is pending ban because you haven't paid yet?

  • Just go there.

A boxed bike would cost about £25 with a courier.

    Chiltern rail = £18

  • A mate bought a bike on ebay, got TNT to pick it up from the guy (through our work), and the TNT got there & was handed a bike, refused to take it as it wasn't in a box. Apparently the seller said "where am I supposed to get a box that big?" hmmm...!

Really don't have time this week and I'm going away for Christmas on Sunday. From Manchester it would cost closer to £50 I think.

  • Since I'm selling bikes on the 'bay I'm getting asked these questioned, so interesting reading. I'm willing to courier them, as long as my costs are covered and the price I get means the effort is worth my while. Sure the LBS will let us have a box as long as I come after delivery day

  • Is pending ban because you haven't paid yet?

Not really sure, I am hoping that I won't get a ban if i recompense the seller for their ebay fees. But otherwise yes the ban would be for non-payment.

I know, i have emailed him saying bike boxes are usually free from bike shops and i will fairly recompense him for the time and bother of picking one up.

I think part of the reason he is getting a bit arsey is because the bike went for relatively cheap. It is a very frustrating situation.

  • Out of interest what's the spec? If its a bike he put a lot of money into and got fuck all back for then I feel his pain. I would suggest chucking in extra dorrah to persuade. Negotiation is the name of the game

Not that it's not his fault: the watchword is "Reserve"

Why don't you start by paying the seller?

If they don't want PayPal do a bank transfer or cheque so that part of the transacton is satisfied.

Then just hop on a train.

Hopefully the seller will meet you at the nearest station which shortens your total journey.

  • Get on the train you lazy basket it only bleedin worcester

He wants cash on collection. The train will take about 5 hours round trip, and cost close to £50. I don't have time this week.

The bike is a geared 531 105 spec mostly i think, it isn't ridiculously cheap but a good price at £110.

So no solutions then seeing as train isn't an option, no knowledge on the bike box issue?

Ask the seller take it to a bike shop to have it boxed.

Then arrange a courier to collect it from seller or shop.

You still have the issue of cash on collection, which seems easy to resolve.

Then the costs of packing, box and shipment.

  • 531? Awesome. Worcester ain't far from me. What's his name?

  • This could be done in stages. Might be cool.

  • Tristan something. If you know a tristan from worcestor i could kiss you... (providing it is the same one)

  • Tristan? Little Tristan, son of Steve the Wheel and Mary? Never heard of him

I could seriously zip over to Worcester for you, and could easily stick the bugger in a box. I'm not holding enough folding to hand over that sort of cash on your behalf, but if you sort payment I could hold the thing for you, and then you just sort the courier pick up

  • bloody brilliant. consider yourself PMd.

    Well that's a relief.

Out of interest, why a pending ban? eBay operates a three strikes policy. Are you already at two strikes then?

  • Parcelforce & promo voucher = £16 for a 48 hour turnaround?
