  • I remember coming down to London as a teen in 89/90 and loving all the graffiti, so much so that I based my final GCSE art exhibition on it(got an 'A' :-))
Anyway, when I moved down in 95 to go to college I found that my favourite artist 'KNOWN'(I won't put his real name for obvious reasons)went to my college!
He lived in Catford and most of his work could be seen all over South & South East London. Like it cos he was 'Known all over London'!
It's a shame that most of his work(which was fucking ace!) is now non existent - the buildings it was on have been knocked down or done-up or they have just been whitewashed
Can't find any of his work, but here's his tag. May jog a few memories

  • I remember the tag well. It seems you couldn't take a train into London Bridge without seeing his name all along the way.

Similarly, the weekly trip to Southbank in the early nineties always took in a bit of rubbernecking to see if Known had put up anything new...my favourite was the green rasta character overlooking the platforms of LB station (now obliterated).

  • He had one on a block of steps on the right coming into London Bridge, another good one on the left approaching Blackfriars, another down in Lewisham in a clinic car park, loads of others.....frantically looking online for his work!

    Beat me to it! ;-)

  • Shit, shit, shit! Just remembered, my mate used to live with his ex girlfriend when we were at college! Remember her showing me loads of his pre sketches.....drool!

  • Never really checked his graphic work out. Just used to seeing strings of tags, often in some of the less usual places. I think one of my favourite ones was a rail works shed. He'd tagged in a row around the edge of the door. Nice little creative touches to tagging elevates it from booring to worthwhile.

  • 'Cosa' and 'Fume' were also good'uns - West London based

  • aiiight!! used to hang around with a lot of those^^
used to go and watch the chrome angels at work too. stopped myself when i got caught :(

Remember them, also at the top of the London Bridge line approaching, coming in from Brockley/Honor Oak

Also used to do LOADS of simple, little '?'s all over the place

Remember this fucker on Paddington/Royal Oak trackside? Not there any more, was there for years

    +1

  • Here it is, the old classic.

  • Wicked! He also used to do those little faces at the bottom too

  • ....need to stop tagging my van, and my fucking house.. if i woke up one day and someone had painted a nice piece on either, i'd be happy. but shitty tags that look like someone gave fat markers to a 14 year old illiterate get me super angry. and if i caught someone tagging my stuff i'd be dishing out a shoe-ing.

not hating on good writers, just the other pricks.

  • used to go and watch the chrome angels at work too.

  • I had a load of wicked pics from under the North Circular, as it went over the trainlines heading into Barking Station. Every pillar had a burner at the bottom. I was East London '95-'98 and Known definately rings a bell

  • Known is still around, playing in the band...known, think they still gig around deptford/new x area

that massive commission outside brockley station is still around

  • What's "ace" about scrawling your name across someone's private property?
This 'Known' character (if that is his real name) is nothing but a common vandal. Hopefully he's in jail.

    Not really :-)

Mind you, from the pics you've posted, he's not all that.

  • naw dude known is serious
have a look at the brockley piece
hes repped Lewisham like no other

  • all Fume did was tag all over the established West London artists

he represented the end if NY style grafitti in west london

and the start of the 'tag' culture

some of my mates would scrape money together for a week to buy paint

and then spend fifteen hours on a piece

only for Fume to come along and scrawl all over it

it was like because his work was shite

everybody elses had to be too

Pistonator I have some original West London work here

my mate pete to sprayed up my old surfboard

It's only a tag not a piece and the work Seldom Killer put up is not one of his better works tbh; BUT the dude had a wicked style, often quite basic and only used a few colours but just looked the tits every time a new one popped up

Might have to get down to Brockley and take a pic.....
Not been down that way for years, probably seen it but where is it exactly, can't remember?
