Need to get a grip...

Posted on
  • Got myself some lovely Nitto drops the other day...perfect colour for my bike. Trouble is, on wet cold days, it's like wrestling a couple of greased mackerel...

So I don't want to cover up the lovely shiny goldness, but fed up of chinning myself as i slide off the end of the drops...

    Apart from HTFU, any suggestions?

Was thinking of getting some clear bar tape...anyone tried this?

  • Emperor's bar tape

  • never tried that but Charge make clear kierin style grips

  • Why dont you just get a set of soyo long grips from planet x?
long grips will only cover the bottom part of your bars.

  • interesting, thanks both, will go look them up...

had an idea, if all else fails, to use clear grip tape...ride and exfoliate at the same time...

  • I have nice shiny Nitto bars. I slid the Champ grips onto the top where I hold on the road, and onto the drops for the track. I still have plenty of the chrome exposed and I think it gives a nice effect. Nice and tight and grippy too

    Em....HTFU...?

  • +1 for what mikec did.. Would have done it myself but taping my whole bar was the easier option at the time..

Young man, buy yourself some retro 70's cycling gloves.

  • the soma clear grips.. buy 2 if you want a full coverage

or get Tynan to make you a pair of his bespoke "HandinHand" gloves

  • I'd like to throw ^that^ through an open window onto a shite driver's lap...

...I like cloth tape on my bars these days.

  • never tried that but Charge make clear kierin style grips

I think Julio wins. The Charge Plungers seem the lowest profile and least conspicuous.

  • but you don't see the part of the bars you hold on to...

as it is UNDER YOUR HANDS

FFS, someone in 2001 posted a picture of his bike before he had put the tape on, and unwittingly spawned a legion of bare-barred cyclists

sorry, but I think bare drops for daily riding are as moronic as those cut down to fuck-all.
do you want to ride you bike or sit staring at it?

easy does it mate. I admit I am staring lovingly at it, but that's because it's taken me 3 months to build it (long story), finished it Sunday before last so its all rather new and shiny still....

But i'm also riding it, 200 miles since last Sun come rain or shine going to work and out in the evenings...

Yes having them bare looks good, but you're totally right not a practical daily option. I want a grip/cushion solution, but ideally one that doesn't cover their lovely shiny goldness...

hence starting this thread for advice and tonight of to the LBS to get either clear Charger Plunger or Champ grips...

  • My bullhorns are bare, but i wear gloves every ride... seem to grip well enough on the top and give a little bit of movement on the horns while pulling from side to side.

NB: I have no idea what im talking about

  • You gonna ride at the track at all? You have to have tape or grips at Herne Hill so the glove option is a no no

  • I think maybe I've missed the point of all this... No, I have never ridden on a track. I ride for transport alone.

Would like to have a sticky beak at HH out of curiosity one day though.

  • You can use one of their bikes at HH.
Its closed at the moment for winter but should open again in a few months. Have a search for one of the old threads about it if you fancy going - all the info is there

PS. you have to have drops AND tape/grips on your bike at HH

  • Cheers for the heads up but observer only! Chicken legs and chocolate lungs do not bode well.

  • might sound like a complete retard but some clear shrink tubing if it comes in a big enough diameter
I know it come in a wide enough diameter in black because I covered a couple of cricket bat handles

  • I also just use gloves, you can get yourself a nice pair with gel inserts too to help out, about the track idea, shirely you can just have a pair of drops with tape on them ready to switch if you want to take it to the track.

  • Dearskin gloves avaliable from any Wal-mart , Dicks or your nearest riding store
