turns out my cranks where fucked, i need a new crankset i was just wondering if anyone knows the stock giant bowery bottom bracket so i can get a compatible crankset

take it out, youll find it written on the bottom of the cartridge, failing that just measure it.

Once you've removed the cranks and the BB the length will be on the BB.
Failing that, just take it to a shop and have them supply suitable replacement. -

I have a question about removing cranks. I have an '08 LeMond Fillmore, and I am currently (unsuccessfully) trying to remove my cranks. I have an allen wrench which fits, but I cannot get the nut to budge at all. Any tips or suggestions about what I can do? I'd really rather not take the bike into the shop, as I want to do all the work myself (whenever possible).

On that crankset there are 2 allen screws one a 10 and one an 8 you tighten the 8 and then lock it im place with the 10.
8 and 10 denoting allen key size. -

^I have been able to remove the 10 (the bigger one?), but have not been able to remove the 8. It's just too tight. I cannot get it to budge. Any suggestions?
While I'm at it, I suppose I should go ahead and ask whether I should be trying to turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it or clockwise. Either way, I've been unable to make any progress.

I can only suggest you get someone to help. With them pushing downwards on the opposite crank while you also push downwards with your allen key on the other side, you should be able to move it easily.

Some penetrating oil would help, give it a good oiling and leave it for a while. WD40 might even do it.

I can only suggest you get someone to help. With them pushing downwards on the opposite crank while you also push downwards with your allen key on the other side, you should be able to move it easily.
or get a decent length of tubing (like a bit of ski pole, if you have that kinda thing lieing around) pop it over the top of the longer length of allen key, and hey presto more leaverage... if you keep the wheels on and use a wall as a brake it helps to to stop movement (2 points of contact)

Or try and position the allen key so that you're able to squeeze the key and crank together with your hand. I've found I can exert loads more force simply squeezing over pushing/pulling etc.
