Nail Varnish ?

  • I'm clearing up a few rust spots on my frame and I can't quite get a good match colour wise for a touch up paint, so will just clear coat on bare metal after removing rust.

How hard wearing is nail varnish ? Most automotive clear coats seem to come in aerosols which isn't ideal for small spots of metal

  • Get a small tin of hobby paint (designed for model making and the like), better still... take your bike into the shop and match the paint to the frame there and then.

  • I remember when those pots were 30p each.

Most Halfords do a matching paint scheme. You'll probably end up with more paint than you need, but if you ever sold the frame on with half a can of paint it could be what clinches the deal for the buyer!

  • When I previously treated rust spots, I've found a reasonably close match, but it doesn't look quite right. Just going to try clear coating over the metal this time as it's a reasonably tatty frame anyway.

Is there much difference between nail varnish and hobby'ists clear coat enamel ?

  • Nail varnish isn't very durable.
