  • Any suggestions for bike parking around oxford circus? Friend is working at GAP, but doesn't want their bike to disappear or get stripped.

  • i've left mine just behind that juice bar thing next to the tube exit plenty of times, no toubles.

  • all day?

  • chain it to one of those blokes holding a "GOLF SALE" sign

  • yah, not in the dark tho. there are cameras so spot a place where they point and feel safe.

  • If we know that the police never checks the footage I'm sure that the bad guys do too.

  • i usually chain it outside TopShop, just in fornt of the main entrance.
There is a security Guard there in the door, and i think Cameras poitning outside, so i always hope it would work as a bit of a deterrant, but admittedly it won't stop anyone if they really decide to nick the bike.

  • There are cameras pointing at the bike stands at the junction next to Uniqlo. I've parked there all day plenty of times.

  • The rail outside topshop is another good idea Sol ^

  • Has anyone ever thought of a dedicated "bike parking" thread? Or considered adding it to the forum map? It occurred to me the other day when I was looking for info on locking up around St Pancras [ground floor of the car park at the back of the station]. Obviously you couldn't list everywhere, but really good/bad spots around popular locations would be a start, particularly for places that don't have obvious bike racks...

  • Surely GAP have a warehouse/back area he can put it in?

    This is London you know!

  • DBs, tell them to buy a beater and stop whining
    (c) you

    Nice one Veevee

  • what about outside the John Snow? Should be enough hipsters around slacking off to keep an eye on it.

  • I rarely head to Oxford St but if I do I lock my bike on the railings halfway across (traffic side) the padestrian crossing at Oxford Circus.

It's very busy and extremely covered by cctv.

Next to the open top bus.

that has been mentioned before but decided that it would be a bad idea since this is a very public forum, and theft would able to pinpoint whereabout you lock your bike.

if we have a lots of listed place to lock your bike, that give them oppourity.

yeah ive done a few research trips (all dayers) round that way +1 to what Sol said.

front wheel frame railings.... back wheel frame railing...lock safe

  • i work a block from Oxford St and park my bike in a gated mews with armed guards (i.e. machine guns) on the gates... i feel pretty safe

Cheers Ed, hadn't thought of that.

On the other hand, most places normally have a lot of bikes for thieves to pinch. Its not necessarily about hiding bikes, just giving them the best chance when they have to be left in the open. And highlighting "problem areas" isn't going to make thieves think twice about robbing from them. Look at the amount of stuff that gets said about Brick Lane on here - that's obviously not deterred them from taken their stolen goods down every Sunday.

I reckon we give bike thieves too much credit. I'd rather know a sensible place to look my bike up that a (clued-up) thief might know about as well, than lock it to something flimsy round the corner.

Anyway, just my 2p, not looking for a fight. It's a pity that we have to worry about shit like this at all.

  • I worked in an office on Oxford Street. Used to lock up at the bike stands next to Ravel. My bike got pinched on a day when Oxford Circus tube was shut. Some lazy tealeaf didn't want to get the bus or walk. Even took the D-Lock.

  • What ab out taking the front wheel off and taking it with you, how much does that help?

dont you know that all robbing estate kevs are exceptionally good at wheelies?

Didn't think they be so strong they could start one with a fixie ratio.

How about the back wheel then. Pretty sure your standard kev can't handle a nose manual all the way to say...Peckham?
