  • I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I assure you that it's not!
I know that the sun goes East to West from sunrise to sunset, but which way does it traverse in a north-south manner in England? I've got a new watch and it's asking me to put details in. I think it will allow me to tell where north is by using my watch by looking at the sun.
Any info about this manner would be much appreciated.

  • Goes via the south - hence the desirability of south-facing gardens, and the fact that snow stays longer on north-facing slopes on mountains in the northern hemisphere.

  • In Autumn and Winter, the sun never moves into the northern sky hemisphere, while in Spring and Summer, it rises North of East and sets North of West.

  • seeing as the sun is at it's zenith in the tropics and we are in the northern hemisphere i thought it would be obvious where the sun is?
(this is assuming you know how to use a compass)

  • I wanna see this watch.. for three quid that's pretty snazzy.

  • In Autumn and Winter, the sun never moves into the northern sky hemisphere, while in Spring and Summer, it rises North of East and sets North of West.

    Correct .

Also, it never goes above 23.5 degrees N so it is always to the South of us.

@Lurker103 - what exactly is the watch asking for?

  • Also...

  • Not sure if this one is from a Northern or Southern Hemisphere persepctive so it's either completey wrong or completely right... ;)

  • Pajames - just do this for rough idea. (northern hemisphere only)
Point hour hand at sun, bisect the angle between hour hand and 12:00, that is your north-south line.

  • It can be done with any analog watch.

How to use your watch as a compass.

    EDIT: too slow

  • Tommy you pig-lover. Have you got me on Ignore list?

  • Not sure if this one is from a Northern or Southern Hemisphere persepctive so it's either completey wrong or completely right... ;)

That is from a lower Northern Hemisphere perspective, assuming mid-summer, becasue the 'summer sun' seems to be almost overhead.

In the UK, the sun is *always *south of us.

In winter in the South, the 'winter sun' would be on the North side.

  • Did someone say something?

    ;)

  • for tynan!

  • Holy fuck.

I arse around on this forum so I DON'T have to do any work, and you fucknuts start talking about sunlight.

The four horsemen are saddled up.

    :)

  • Correct .

@Lurker103 - what exactly is the watch asking for?

All it is asking me to do is set whether the sun traverses towards the north or the south. It's not something I've ever really thought about before.

@Pajamas: Sorry to burst your bubble, I splashed out and paid a tenner! Here it is:

It also tells me the moons cycle and when high and low tide is.

At this point I'd like to just make it clear that I was just after a cheap watch and the rest is all extra stuff. It's just got me interested now because I don't know what it's on about!

  • The sun traverses to the south of us. At all times.

    I hope this helps. :-)

  • technically the sun stays put and the earth moves around it and spins.

  • That's deep Dale, really deep. ;)

YES, that is exactly what I wanted to know! How did you know that, btw?

Thank you dogsballs, very useful for the current question in hand!

    I'm a navigator.

(for the purposes of navigation, we assume that the earth is stationary and everything orbits the earth btw)

Fari enough. Cheers for the useful information. I can not go outside and determine where north is by looking at the sun.
OH SHIT. Where's the fucking sun gone?

BTW, if you haven't looked out of the window today, the weather's horrible. I'm actually considering using public transport :-S I just can't be arsed to put my wets on and still get soaked through them.
