  • My freewheel and freewheel removal tool.

Got an unused freewheel on the bike and want rid it, can't get the bugger to shift though.
Soaked it in WD40 (I know ProGas is better) and am turning it the correct way but am having difficulty trying to make it move.
Any tips as there isn't currently a thread on freewheel removal.
    Thanks.

  • What are you using to turn the removal tool?

  • yer finger 'n' thumb won't do it-put spanner on hex an give it a very sharp confident whack

  • use a big fuck off spanner for better leverage, still no luck?? stick a scaffold pole on the end. might want to put the bolt on to hold the tool in place...

  • ... oh, & htfu. that always helps

  • Half inch socket and breaker bar FTW

  • Nicest way, if you got one, is hold the tool in a vice with the wheel laid out horizontal above. grab rim/tyre at 9erclock and 3, and bob's your uncle.

  • yeah, that works too!

  • A better method is to secure the removal tool in a bench vice then rotate the wheel anticlockwise.

Tried this method and it still won't shift, LBS it is then. Grrr.

  • Brixton Cycles'll do it for ya for nuthin', Chris... It'll take 'em 30 seconds...

  • Yep that's what I was thinking going to go see what Barnaby can do.

  • The little bugger is off, excellent, if anyone wants an un-used but fitted 17t dicta freewheel it's theirs for the price of the Coach & Horses (souths) finest ale.

    Might be interested, dibs?

  • You'll never get it off!

  • big spanner/ can of spinach says I could.

  • when i removed an old multi speed it was hard to get of i had to use a long spanner to get some leverage, if you got a vice put it in and turn it like a steering wheel

  • that's really useful info, have just picked up an old pug racer which i am going to convert to a fixed wheel. this is my first time building a bike so might ask for help from time to time if thats ok.

    :)

  • Could I borrow the tool Squire?

  • it has to be at least from the freewheel remover tool to atleast past the edge of the rim to get a good leverage
if you aint got a big enough spanner then get a piece of pipe big enought to fit the spanner in to give you leverage, something like a scafehold pipe but dont nick it of the side of a building lol

  • i read you got it off

  • Use a vice.
