Ok, so there's nothing I would like more than to burl around Melbourne for 7 weeks on my own bike. The idea of it is just awesome.
That said, the idea of getting the thing to Heathrow, pulling it apart, getting a bike box, putting it in and the inevitability that it won't arrive in one piece is hard to get motivated about. Then I have to do it all over again the other way (which is a lot easier - i'll have a car so not too much of an issue)
Spose I could get a clunker for the time i'm there, but it's summer and riding around on my bike that fits perfectly holds way more appeal than something that probably won't be the right size, ride quality, etc.
So... the question is: Should I HTFU and take it to Melb?
Fo' shiz! The thought of 7 weeks without my bike scares me!

ive travelled with my bike using the cardboard boxes you get from bike shops. double up the cardboard sheets on vital areas. bubble wrap and grab some old styrofoam to fill and stabilise it inside. stiffer and more secure than most softcase bike bags. bike survived several airports and stopovers

I've traveled with my bike in a big plastic bag supplied by the airline.
It did get damaged on the way back though (bent hanger).

be prepared for aussie drivers and tram tracks ;)

Take your skewers out (if you have 'em).
Chock the fork and track ends/rear stays so they can't compress.
Detached derailler/tensioner if you have one.
Pad to the shithouse! -
• #13
Do you have a helmet?
It is the law over there because they can't stop all the drivers chucking VB longnecks at cyclists. -
• #14
BMX lid is preferable... Tho' you will sweat to the shithouse... ;]
