You should probably wait for someone who actually has one of the bikes (or has worked on one) to get a definitive answer. However, I suspect that the CaneCreek IS-2 1 1/8 would be the one.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Cane_Creek_IS_2_Integrated_Aheadset/5300003225/
or more choice here: http://www.rutlandcycling.com/9877/Cane-Creek-IS-2---IS-8-Headsets.html?referrer=froogle1
The models with the 'i' after them e.g. is-2i / is-8i are the Campagnolo compatable ones you referred to, if the headset ios a different shape -- as you said, more square -- then you just want the is-2 or is-8 I think.
Of course I am just taking an educated guess here...

thanks for the help.
One thing I'm struggling to understand it the types of intergrated/hidden headsets.
As I said, I've had campagnolo hidden headesets on my road bike and they are called 45 degrees.
I can see why since the bearing flange seems to be at a 45deg angle. The other type of integrated headset seems to be called 36 degree. What does the 36 degree refer to?
I'm assuming that this one will meet my needs:

The number refers to the angle of the shoulders sitting inside the headtube.
Basically, as far as I know, Campag use 45 deg, CaneCreek and probably most others use 36.
thanks for the help.

Forget getting a campag headset. it won't fit.
Why? Here's why:
There are basically 3 types of Aheadset:Integrated.
whose bearings fit inside the frame tube for a 46mm OD headtube.
Of the integrated headsets there are two sub types: Campagnolo and Crane creek.
Campag type have their bearings at 45x45 deg angle
Crane Creek have them at 36 x 45 deg angleInternal headset (or Zero Stack or low profile or semi integrated)
These are for 50 mm OD headtubes and have a lip on the bearings that are pressed into the frame.Threadless Aheadsets
These unlike the other two have fixed cups pressed into the frame and the bearing sit inside the fixed cups.
The Giant Bowery uses an internal headset (type 2) 46mm
Common makes are Crane Creek or FSAMore info here:

Actually, I'm going to revise my opinion on the Giant Bowery headset.
I don't think it's a type 2.In short, I bought a crane creek integrated h/set and when I fitted the bearings, they sat too deep in the headtube so that the frame and fork rubbed . It seemed that the bearing were too shallow.
So, I thought it must be a type 2 headset: zero stack. So I bought a Cane Creek version of these and the bearing cups were too big. They were for a 50mm headtube and the Bowery must be 46mm. Anyway, actual bearings temselves fitted nicely without the cups, so i used them and made it work that way: as an integrated h/set.
Not sure what the definitive answer is as to what type of h/set the bowery has.
The ones I took out don't conform to any type on the Parktools web site. -

I'm going to bump this thread, because I think the headset in my Bowery is on its way out and I want to replace it, however no one in this thread seems to be entirely sure about what kind it is. So could anyone advise me what kind to buy? Preferably with links to a website where I can buy it, so I have to do absolutely no work whatsoever and can just sit here eating a quiche. I'm not that bothered about how flashy the headset I buy is, I just want a relatively cheap one that works. So come on guys, hook a brother up with a headset.

I'd like to know too

any Giant dealer will be able to get a replacement Bowery headset they are available from Giant UK....
-
• #13
surely they must be available elsewhere, online for example.
Not necessarily the same one, but the same type.
It's the type of headset that we need to know since it doesn't seem to conform to the common types of headset that are most common. -

checked with Giant UK and they'll be around £30.00.....pm me if you want one

Well, I've taken the plunge and I'm replacing my headset. It went from being to desirable to being a necessity when I broke the old one while taking it out! Unfortunately the one I bought to replace it from Cavendish Cycles turned out to be the wrong size, so I'll go back tomorrow with the cups I've removed and see if they've got anything to match them. However, if they don't I've got a strong feeling that this is the one that's needed:
I'll order one and let you know how I get on if I can't get a suitable sized headset from a shop tomorrow. Good thing I've got more than one bike! (Well, I wouldn't have taken the risk of removing the headset as I did if I didn't have more than one bike.)

that FSA one looks promising.
Why do you think that that is the right one for the bowery?
IMHO it looks like it might be cos of the small lip on the internal cups, which is quite unusual. -

Well, I bought this earlier today from Cavendish Cycles:
http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP3353.aspx?utm_source%3dinternal%26utm_medium%3d3%26utm_campaign%3dDPLedit: Well, I think it was that one. That page doesn't give the model number but the model number of the headset I bought was BHP-10.
And have now successfully fitted it! So if you buy that it'll definitely work. However, out of the need to do something about the situation last night, I ordered the FSA headset anyway. I think the feeling of having done something, no matter how pointless, enabled me to get to sleep faster. When it arrives I'll compare it to the headset I removed and post to say whether they seem to be the same. I may also offer the one I bought for sale.
Interestingly, the BBB headset I've posted a link to lists the cup diameter as 41.4mm whereas the headset that I took out had a diameter of 41.8mm. Maybe the FSA one will be closer to that?

thanks LondonSLGSS.
I might pop over to Cavendish cycles tomorrow to pick one up if they've got one.
how did you know it was the right headset for the bowery? -
• #19
The bloke there was very helpful and looked through the headsets they had to find that one. He measured it up against the one I'd taken out and found that the BBB one was actually more like 41.5 or 41.6mm than the 41.4 it's listed as being, so it was only 0.2mm off the one I'd taken out. Having installed it I can confirm that it's still big enough to achieve a secure press fit.
In my search for a headset I also tried Velorution, who were pretty helpful. The bloke in the workshop measured up the headset, but wasn't sure if they had one in that size and told me to come back later on when his colleague would be in who'd know if they had that headset. I also tried Cycle Surgery on Pentonville Road and Evans on Rathbone Place, both of which were predictably unhelpful.

thanks mate..so if i go in aand ask for a BBB semi integrated headset, he should hook me up?
-
• #21
I should think so, if they've still got any in stock. Like I said the exact model and specification for the one I bought is BHP-10, for road bikes, and the diameter of the bearing cups is 41.4mm. But I may have bought the last one, as the box for the one I got looks like it'd been kicking around there for a little while before being sold!

• #22
ok mate...I'll have to give them a ring...thanks for the help
-
• #23
Like I say, if they don't have it then buy the one I link to in my post. As long as it's got the 41.4mm cup diameter it should fit fine.

dotbike are a really good company,,,,I think I'll order from them.

As I said, I ordered this earlier in the week before I managed to get one that fitted from Cavendish Cycles:
http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP5913.aspx?utm_source%3dinternal%26utm_medium%3d3%26utm_campaign%3dDDIIt's arrived, I've measured it up, and it's also exactly the right size to fit the Bowery. So does anyone want to buy it off me? I payed £14.51 for it (as you can see on the page I linked to!) and it's brand new, having only been removed from the box for me to measure it. Make me an offer if you want it!
Hi,
I need a new headset for a Giant Bowery.
I think it's an integrated headset, but it's slightly different to the ones I've had before.
I'm used to the Campagnolo compatable ones, with a 45 degree angle.
The One on the Ginat Bowery seems to be a different shape...more square.
Can anyone advise me on what sort I need?
thanks
Ives
