Does the pin go all the way through both plates of the half link ?

No tools at all? If you could scrounge pliers or mole grips you could squeeze it back in.
Failing that, find a house-brick and a rock; put the brick on the opposite side from the protruding link, then smack the sticky-out bit back with the rock.

Exactly right. Hit it with a Taxi, works every time.

Ok, which one looks like what is going on with your half link - looking from above, pins are orange, plates are blue - the camera in your photo would be looking from the bottom towards to the top in these illustrations.

Yes since around one o'clock, I just knew this question would come up.
The prune told me from her well deserved grave. :)

Right ! You need a chain tool ! :)
I genuinely can't think of an easy way to get the pin in without crushing the link - if you had a spare inner link you could perhaps put into the gap (X) to support the plates and stop them being bent/crushed - and gently try and tap the pin through with a hammer ?

Tynan, you are too helpful not to be a Northerner; or is that yet another myth exploded?

Too strong a mix of double (ish) negative and non-sequitur to compute accurately.
