• I’ve taken my bike to pieces in preparation for a good powder coating, and so found my self quickly putting my old road bike together and cycling to work on that this morning….

It’s damn amazing how quickly something which was once second nature becomes almost alien… All that free wheeling, and not being able to slow down using the peddles… it feels quite out of control… and I never had clips on my road bike, so having my feet totally unattached was horrible! The peddles aren’t track pedals either so I just felt like I was walking around on a slippery deck or something. (bit of a weird analogy that..)

Anyone else gone back for any reason or after a bit of time and found it odd?

Need to make some alterations I think… and borrow a fixie from someone!!

  • It's quite a weird feeling. I'm riding my bike free atm due to hub issues, and really don't like it.

  • I just built up a '90s Merckx road bike and, together with my first use of clipless, it is an altogether uncomfortable experience. But then I figure that the first few hours of fixed felt suicidal, so I really ought to just HTFU and put up with it. But really, how do you slow down and stuff on these. Brakes? Quoi? Although, gears are quite nice. Like finding the perfect gear ratio at will. Crazy new fangled technomology.

  • I rode my mate's racer on Friday (after a few Deliriums) and I ended up going over the handlebars as I forget how breaks work and panicked a bit. Bit of a spaz thing to do, but it was horrible not riding fixed. Free-wheeling basically feels like time wasted to me.

  • Spend a bit of time riding it and it'll feel fine and you'll be able to swap back and forth at will. If you want to have fun then climb a massive hill, click through to 53x11, get in an aero tuck and hammer down the other side. Much more fun to have a freewheel in those situations.

Nice one Duncan (dunkin'?). Spaz is definately the word, if not slightly politically incorrect!

I swear, every time I change from racer to fixed, fixed to racer there is an initial period of confusion for the body! Worse for me going onto the racer than the fixed, fixed IS more natural.

Once I was doing a few lasp of Richmond Park on the Cervelo (racer), a herd of deer started running across the road in front of me and I locked my feet! Absolutely hilarious!

  • Or go to Wales, climb a massive hill, then hammer down it freewheeling, sprinting out of the corners, and use the 203mm rotors to sort out the speed- more power than legs alone I would say.

That's not me, it's the other Donut (he has no ! ) The clue is in my avatar! ;)

  • My fixed is on ebay, still waiting for my new one... Been riding my road bike about in central Londona nd absolutely hate it. I feel fine on it out in the countryside, but it feels as kisu_shimu says, completely out of control. Wish FBM would hurry the fuck up

    good choice,
i wish i could afford one of those
post a pic once it's built

  • remember jet lags?

    exactly the same thing.

  • Should I go freewheel? I've heard it can be good fun, but all this talk of it being dangerous and difficult to control is scaring me off! I don't want to crash when I forget to stop pedalling...

    Cheers, will do.

They went to bloody eurobike and forgot/couldn't be arsed/there actually probably quit busy, to ship my frame, been 5 weeks since I ordered it.

  • Kinda related... after I got hit off, I didn't ride my road bike for months. Jumped on it to go for a ride with my friends after getting it fixed up. I was scared shitless for the whole day, compared to the mountain bike, the road bike felt twitchy and I thought it would ever stop in time.

  • i personally cant wait to get my 80's/90's road bike done but some idiots keep buying the frames off ebay for conversions at stupid prices
