High Flange vs Low Flange

  • Hi,

I'm looking at building up a new wheelset. Ive settled on pwood hubs. I was just wondering whether there are any actual performance differences between high flange and low flange hubs? Or is it purely aesthetic?

Is there a wheel strength thing to consider?I like having the option of bunny hopping a curb.

Also is there such a thing as low profile rims? deep v's are so last year...

Any recommendations on the kind of lacing?

    Cheers.

  • There are indeed such a thing as low profile rims. most have no braking surface and are tubular rims. i'm not sure of any specifics but i'm sure someone can point you in the right direction

  • High flange hubs are for the track although fashion dictates they are for the road these days. Low flange means longer spokes which gives a more comfortable ride on the road. High flanges mean shorter spokes and stiffer wheels, so great power transfer but not as much give and comfort on rough roads.

  • Shoot me if I'm wrong, but would high flange hubs be more popular with track wheelsets with an appropiate track sprocket (i.e. a low number of teeth) as you can remove a broken drive side spoke without having to remove the sprocket?

Anyway, I prefer the look of LF hubs. That's why I have a pair of HF ones!

  • nah... its a spoke length thing, and these days fashion, i like both and have both on 2 diff bikes.

:D go with medium flange. all good

  • As JDB says it's all down to the stiffness/comfort issue. I prefer highflange for polo type applications as comfort is not an issue with that bike. Generally low flange for a purely distance bike (if I owned such a thing).

    it's an advantage, yes.

I got high flange on the back wheel..

soon to have low flange on the front, because that was all that's available from my supplier. I don't give a toss about mismatching flange sizes.

    Dura-fuckin-Ace

  • keep it in the country (ish) Gold fucking Tec or
Royce- built to all your desires.

  • cheers fellas. any suggestions on low profile wheels that arent tubs?

im still thinking of going for low flange, im pretty sure theyre still strong enough to withstand the bumps and occasional bunny hop... right?

yes, but you've kinda got it back to front.

high flange are stiffer, not stronger. which means less give in the spokes, which means you're MORE likely to have breakage with potholes/bunny hops etc.

that's why high flange is for track and low is for road.

you don't really bunny hop on the track, and I've yet to encounter any potholes

Are you sure? You ride at HH after all. :-)

ah. nice one RPM, thanks for that. youve cemented the decision then.

im thinking of going the whole shebang and getting a phill wood bb now as well.

still waiting for low pro rim suggestions!

    ta.

  • Just get Open Pros and be done with it.

  • why open pros and not cxp's?

  • Just get Open Pros and be done with it.

Get DT Swiss 1.1s lighter than Open Pros, identical profile.

  • Get Open Pros - cheaper :)

  • cool, thanks, ill look into both.

  • WTF are you talking about, tynan? Open Pros are 40g lighter (okay, okay, claimed weights).

  • Mavic MA40

  • i have black goldtecs on 1.1s very nice ride...
although i was thinking of selling and swapping out for some low flange royce. (same rims though)

would you be interested in buying mine?

  • BMMF is right - Open Pros are lighter. DT Swiss 1.1 were but they were single eyeletted and had problems with cracking so DT Swiss upgraded them to double eyelets which added weight.

  • actually scratch that... i cant be arsed to have to find new hubs and i forgot the goldtecs have a great chainline

low profile is the way to go
    :)

  • High flange = more triangulation = stronger wheels.

  • aye, there is some truth in that... otherwise these wouldnt exist...

    DH

    over these

    road..
