My frame (road conversion) has fairly standard length dropouts and there is room for a difference of 3t between cogs without changing chain. 16t for commuting, 19t for polo.

i think that 68 sounds like a good compromise. I have about 63 and it it a tiny bit spinny for going fast but good for tricks

I want to do tricks but still go fast on the road without spinning

Nice. Don't reckon that would go as fast as I'd like without spinning though. But thanks for your helpful contribution.

Always happy to be of assistance.

WeThePeople make such nice compleat bikes.

And you can do tricks on them ;)

i had 46:17 and found it to heavy for the tricks as i am a complete beginner
46:19 is much better and I can have the same chain with both cogs.
I commute from hackney to white city and i does take the same time with both gears.
i think that in traffic spinnier gear works best. especially when you want to get away from cars at traffic lights. -

I run a 48/19. Spinny down the hills, ok on the flat and ok for going up hills. Good acceleration and good for skidding.

I've ridden fixed a while, but only tried skidding since I got my track frame, with a 49/15 I've just started to get the hang of it, but defiantly need a lower ratio/some clips for my pedals.

toby, are you riding fixed without clips? Thats a really bad idea. Really, really bad idea.
-
• #13
Yep, see other posts, I'm sorting some clips! thanks for the advice..
-
• #14
How do you skid with no clips?
-
• #15
1.1to1 for tricks, 69-76gi for road. a bike for every purpose.

How do you skid with no clips?
like that
-

like that
that pics too small to see (clearly). Got a bigger one?
-
• #18
That dosent look like the most practical of stopping methods though.
-
• #19
i find 40x22 is perfect for backflips.
-
• #21
Personally, I always stop like that. I'm not a cock but a bit of a fanny ;)
Just wanted to see the pic a but bigger tho...

Just with pressure on rear:
Same posture just without being clipped in or strapped in. -
• #24
Oh, I always skid by pulling on the leading foot.

Is that your £20 frame Toby? ;)
I want to do tricks but still go fast on the road without spinning.
Do people have 2 diffrenet cogs on a flip flop hub, or swap wheels, (do you have to change the chain everytime you swap over?) or find 1 cog that's a compromise size?
Would you say 68.6 gear inches (47:18) is a good compromise? Or should I go for 17t on one side and try and fit a 19t on the other?
