Looks interesting. So this would only work if its recovered by police right? Its not a tracking device.

Got an email from immobilise.com about there new updated site. Came across this on it.

Anyone every used one or got there bike back because of it?
I am involved with this product and have visited all of the police forces in the UK and to date 15 are using it as part of their cycle crime reduction initiative in over 35 different locations. There are over 3000 scanners with the UKs police forces and they are using them proactively. One realy good statistic that has come out of these initiatives is that tagged cycles are 10 times less likely to be stolen.
The tag has been around for over 10 years and has started to take off in the last 18 months. The difference is the immobilise.com database which is now searchable by the police through their own computer so any bike stolen from one police area yet found in another can now be identified. I still visit the police and encourage them to get the public to register any property on the database. So far 19 million people have registered over 26 million items of property. Visit the site, register your bike and come back to me with your comments please. If you want any further information please cvontact me on j.macintyre@virgin.net
ThanksJohn Macintyre

I bought something similar but my frame broke and I couldn't remove the thing, because obviously the idea is that once it's in, it can't be removed by thieves (or yourself).
Mine was a datatag, £20 for a tiny little transponder chip about the size of a grain of rice, with the glue to stick it to the inside of the frame, plus a few stickers and a marking kit. Looked like it was worth about 50p in total. If it helped get your bike back then it's £20 well spent, but I have no faith in the police taking bike theft seriously enough for the tag to be useful.
I also have insurance which at first I thought was better than having a datatag, but judging by the small print, insurance companies dont take bike theft seriously either.
Still, £20 one-off plus monthly insurance payments of £5 for peace of mind plus the slightly increased chance of getting your bike back (or a new bike if you don't)... probably worth it... maybe... well, definitely. Maybe. Yes.

what how are they less likely to be stolen if they're tagged? they are more likely to be recovered maybe, but a tag a thief doesn't know about isn't goting to stop them robbing a bike.
i came across this immobitag today, but would this work? or would any half brained bike thief clock it straight away

it probably work if it right inside the frame, right down near the bottom of the seat stay than just in the middle where it can easily be removed, but defintely doesn't make the bike 10 time less likely to get stolen.

Datatags don't get removed - smart thieves can zap 'em with a microwave.
Although they probably still have value, as it's extra hassle. And who wants hassle when your're jonesing?

surely registering your frame number as well as writing down a telephone number, frame number and name on a piece of paper and shove it down the seat stay would help too?

Only just seen this thread. What John MacIntyre says is very interesting. The key problem with these registration schemes has always been that there have been so many different ones. With immobilise.com, there is a chance to have a single resource that the police can use more successfully.

dude fuck all that shit, buy a little chip that you can use as a tracking device. Once your bike is stolen you can tell were its heading. And the money you saved on not tagging your bike with the imobiliser just buy another second hand d lock

the ImmobiTag only cost £15 (from my LBS), I suppose it's worth getting if my bike got stolen and the police need a way to identify it.

That's some microwave. Do they build their own?

do you put a sticker on the bike to say "this bike has an immobiTag?" otherwise i can't see how it would make your bike ten times less likely to be stolen, maybe ten times more likely to be recovered.

I got one for my titanium frame as it has no frame numbers on it, have registered all my bikes on www.immobilise.com (you can download certificate for each bike) so if bikes get nicked and show up can prove they are mine. Have read of people spotting their stolen bikes but being unable to get them back as did not report stolen and unable to prove ownership. Don't see the point of putting the warning sticker that comes with it on the frame, I don't leave the bike in public unwatched and would rather they did not know the tag was there.

Thinking of getting one, Has any one on here ever had a bike recovered by one one these??

I have these on all my bikes. Got them free from the Dibble's Crime Prevention Officer - just emailed him and got a dozen popped through the door, along with some stickers for the garage/windows etc. He said that they check all recovered bikes with the scanner as a matter of course, so providing you register it properly, it's straight back to you.
There is of course a sticker for the bike making it clear it's tagged as a deterrent. I fit mine covering the thing in araldite and ramming it right down the bottom of the seat tube with a stick; it's not ever coming out, trust me. I don't believer this microwave tosh for a second, especially with a steel bike.
How many they actually ever recover is, of course, another matter entirely.
