Wanted: Video cleaning chain?

i saw a short vid of a keiren rider cleaning his chain with fine cotton cloth over the sprocket and chainring. anyone know where it is?? searched

what kind of cloth is that do we reckon? and presumably that lube being applied? or is it degreaser? hmm.

I cleaned my chain (and the rest of the bike) for the first time ever on christmas day. its super quiet now. used a wire brush and a bucket of soapy water. sadly, after a week of london filth, its back to its old state (still quiet though).

You can wind a cloth into a BB or hub bearing in between cup and ball, and spin it? Without any disassembly?

I've been doing my chain like this with screenwipes, little bit of alcohol on there and they're not linty.

+1 for bog roll, give it a go, what have you got to lose

agreed. i've done it many times using bog roll, folded in half length-wise. works fantastically, but you should slide your wheel a bit forward to give the chain a bit of slack before you do it.

do it once while using degreaser, second time to get most of the degreaser back off once it's clean, then a third time to apply the lube. works perfectly and is nice and clean!

Ive always used a similar method (bog roll though) for cleaning & oiling chains. Its so hard to get both dirt & fresh excess oil off in any other way.

I read in another thread to use baby wipes (http://www.lfgss.com/thread14922.html)

Would they be good to use for this method or should I stick to cotton or thick kitchen roll?

I have a chainbath, but have never been arsed to use it, baby wipes are so much more convenient.

Chain bath looks good. The Kierin method cleans the cogs too - would the chain bath do that?

Big glass jar with industrial solvent in it. Used to use petrol, but it gunges up too quickly and an environmental disaster waiting to happen (solvent just evaporates leaving a neat gunge in the bottom of the jar which I change maybe once a year).

I store all my out of use chains in it (mtb has 3 in rotation etc), when needed, fish them out, allow to dry on newspaper, then a quick spray with muckoff easily removes anything thats left on them. Road bikes get teflon 'dry' lube, mtbs get 'wet' lube from finish line, there are better lubes, but I have piles of it for free from a bike shop flood damage pile.

Just replace your chain, cog and chainring after every few rides. Geez, will you all stop being such tight arses.
